Hello

I want to share a basic thing to check first for transmission trouble. 1997 explorers to current require
Mercon V (5) transmission fluid. If you have the old Mercon III transmission fluid put in it you will experience some problems.

My Explorer 98 sport 4.0 Sohc 5R55E 5 speed auto transmission. I had the first flush done at 30,000 miles
at a local drive through oil change place. Recently some 20,000 miles later, I experienced late shifts and
a higher engine idle speed.

I did some research and tried this product from Lubegard -
http://www.lubegard.com/automotive/trans_atf_mv.html

Within 24 hours of adding the proper amount in. My transmission was shifting perfectly before the trouble
started and the idle speed returned to normal.

You must add the correct amount in and do not overfill the transmission! I had to drain some fluid out first.

The problem is that all the transmission shops are all stocked up on the old mercon III fluid. Also Mercon V is more expensive.

My lesson learned be careful of drive through oil change- and transmission shops places ask questions, and check your fluid levels after they service it. Overfilling the trans and engine can get very expensive.
