"Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- LAPD says the assassination of hotel heiress Paris Hilton was carried out by members of an extremist Christian cult.

"This criminal act is shocking and unprecedented, clearly an action driven by madness and is hateful as it is cold. No effort will be spared in bring the responsible parties to justice," a deparment spokesperson said in an official statement.

Officials are speculating that the shooting could be linked to an underground "retro-morality" movement aimed at the destroying what are seen by some as negative influences in main stream society. The LAPD commented that several other well known celebrities had recieved threats from various unidentified organizations over the past few months.

At around 6:00 PM local time in Los Angeles, Hilton was leaving a upscale clothing store when a single shot rang out. Police quickly closed off the area and ambulances were seen leaving the scene a short time later. Officials are being tight lipped about details but it seems clear that she was killed instantly.

Initial blame is being put on a criminal group called the Second Coming Church for the killing but made no mention of arrests, although local media said two or three people had been held, Reuters reports.

"The murder ... represents an attempt by this terrorist organization to cause chaos, lawlessness and fear in the country to advance their own religious beliefs," the Hilton family lawyer stated in a brief press conference an hour ago.

Paris Hilton exploded into the spotlight when the unauthorized video 1 Night in Paris made her a house hold name. Her celebrity status has been marked by detractors from all sides commenting on her behavior as a negative influence on Americas youth. Recently she had tried to break into acting and singing as well becoming a staple in the fashion industry.

Reactions to the killing have varied between a crowdful of tearful young women who have gathered outside the still police barricaded store to near celebrations among various consverative religious figures. "This just goes to show that those who do not follow Gods path will surely meet their end," remarked the Reverend Jerry Falwell. However much of the attitude at the moment seems to apathetic, as perhaps best summed up by the comment from a passer-by, "I always thought she was just a joke but I guess somebody wasn't laughing."
