How do you reset the "check engine" light?

I've got a '92 xFi, canadian built, 5-speed with no air. My check engine light is part of an OBD-I (onboard diagnostics) system, which should reset if you disconnect the battery.

Mine didn't. I lost all my radio station presets but that was it. The manual (Haynes) said that you could also pull out one of the fuses (tail light) but the stupid book didn't even have a fuse map, to show which particular fuse was wired into the tail light circuit.

Does anyone know? My check engine light was on when I bought my car, with 3 short blinks and one long one. The OBD-I info said that was an oxygen sensor fault. I replaced the sensor and the light pattern changed to 2 short, and one long, which the book says means, "everything's OK, no problems to report"...

...but the darned light

keeps blinking, all the time.

...Oh, and if anyone knows where I could find a map of the fuse panel/circuit layout, that would be awesome. As far as I know, neither the Haynes or the Chilton manuals have one.

There is a raised fuse space on the fuse block. That is the location for inserting a fuse to read the diagnostic codes. Once the code has been read, then you take the fuse back out of the raised holder and the light will no longer blink. That's all there is to it.

I'm not sure this is what you're after, but here's what I have for the fuse panel/circuit layout from my 1994 Manual, hopefully it's similar to your 1992.

in the fuse box under the dash you will see a fure spot thats a little lower than the rest of the fuse spots, its toward the front of the car. with fuse in and key on will blink out codes. error code 31 is MAP sensor, located on firewall by the wiper motor. make sure hose going to it is good and not plugged or cracked, plug and unplug the wire a couple times. unhook battery for at least a minute. pull the fuse out of the fuse box, hook pattery up and start car. if check engine light is out and stays out your fine, if it come back on and you get code 31 again your map sensor is bad

I read your post again, and maybe THIS is what you meant by “fuse map”?

From my ’94 fusebox cover:
