Terminator 2
King of New York
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Ronin
Casino
gladiator
Full Metal Jacket
Once Upon a Time in America (good movie, a little long, but DeNiro's always good)

Then there are also some comedies i like but they're not really masterpieces lol
Happy Gilmore
Billy Madison
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (the owner of the school comedy movies)
Revenge of the Nerds
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Cant think of anymore off the top of my head :)

Thanks Damien (I think) for the critque of my list. Some words of explanation:

Yojimbi is in black and white and in Japanese so a lot of folk haven't seen it (unless their students of foreign film) - Akira Kurosawa was a bit out there and his later movies particularly RAN (which is an incredible visual feast) are more accessible.

Bladerunner - the Director's Cut - the original has that wimpy ending and the appalling voiceover. Incidentally, another edit is due late this year.

Lawrence of Arabia - has to be viewed for what it was. The Cinematography and location sets were something else compared to movies being made in studio sets at the time.

Trainspotting - you don't know Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud ? Get thee to a video store...

To Kill a Mockingbird - again a film against type. It was filmed in B&W after color films were in vogue. The material and the political setting of the time are almost as important as the film itself. You have to remember that at the time this was filmed African-American people were still expected to stand in certain places on buses for white folk or get off. (It won a Oscar for Best Picture)

The Last Seduction and Red Rock West are by the same director and are examples of femme-fatale/film noir. If you like movies that make you think and feature wicked twists of fortune.... then these are great...

Farewell my Concubine is a 3 hour odd epic in Mandarin. It is visually stunning and traces the story of two characters in the Peking Opera from the warlord era, through the Boxer and Cultural Revolution to the modern day.

Indo Chine features Catherine Deneuve and is set against the collapse of French Indo China and independence to Viet Nam. Again another stunning epic.

Belle Epoque is possibly the best film from Spain in the past two decades. It explores the depths of despair and pursuit of pleasure against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. Sexy, Funny and Tragic.

And you do need to see Trainspotting... The writer of the novel Irvine Welsh has a cameo as Mikey Forrester...

It's not the "bad" language it was how the book was written. Which is as it is said in the movie.

If that is understandable:bloated:

hmm,

Fellowship of the Ring
All the Star Wars movies (all equal in their own way)
Black Hawk Down (although the book is better)
Bad Taste (an interesting Peter Jackson Movie)
Jurassic Park Series (yet again not as good as the books)
Resident Evil (bad movie, but the scariest movie I know of)

then there are of course others, but I can't think of them now

I think the book was much better than the movie because it went into much more detail and also followed what happened to Mike Durant following his capture. Also the notes at the end of the book make for good reading.

This was the first (large) book I managed to read from start to finish without a break.

The main reason i forget these though was the filming. There is something about the choreagraphy they use in The Patriot, Gladistor, Saving Private Ryan, and Black Hawk Down.

Resident Evil was definitely very dark, with a very desolate outlook for the future.. and that made it a bit scary in my book.

A few of my favorites would be Saving Private Ryan, Seven, Memento, The Abyss, The Hunt for Red October, Fight Club.
