I have a 2003 BMW 525i and the chrome trim around the doors is dulling in a weird way. It almost looks like galvanized metal. Has anyone else had this problem on a 5 series of this age? I saw this on most of the 5 series cars that I looked at before I bought this one. I am going back a forth over whether to try to polish this trim or replace it or what. Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Mate,

This a common fault with all BMW's, if the car has been jet washed through it's life!! the plastic trim will oxidise leaving it very dull looking, the UK market will replace this trim under warranty if the vehicke is within it's 3 year warranty period. I wouldn't recommend polishing it, you are more likely to cause more damage.

Cheers.

Thanks for the info. I suspected that I am not alone dealing with this problem. I noticed this on many of the cars I looked at before purchasing mine. I have never jet washed this car. I just wash with a shearling mitt and rinse with a garden hose. I will call the dealership and see if they will replace since I have about 6 months/15k left on the warranty.
