Well, I took my '02 Tahoe in a few weeks ago, spent hundreds of $$ to fix the P0440 evap problem, ( and a steering issue behind the fire wall) it was a 'fuel purge solenoid & gas cap". Today, again, my light came on, they (dealer) told me it is a P0446..NOT related. Is this true? they say its the 'fuel pressure regulator,". do u know if there is any relation to the two... i know nothing about this. (im a girl and dont want to get ripped off!)
Curiously enough, I agreed to the diagnostic fee of $95 but when all was said and done, and I went to p/u the vehicle, there was no charge. Why would they NOT charge me? When I dropped it off they said they would not charge if it ended up being the same problem. see what I mean???? :nono:

thanks for your help!

This is what a PO446 code means: P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction
I had a FPR go out on my truck, but I never received a code for a bad one. In fact, I don't know of any code saying whether or not the FPR is going bad. When my FPR went out it there was a running rich code: 172 and 175...I would take it to a different dealer or have a trained mechanic tell you what the problem is...sounds to me kinda fishey...I'm sure there are some other guys on this website that can tell you exactly whats going on with it.

Yeah, sounds like the dealership she went to wants her money...lol...FPR are pretty expensive from them...what do you think she should do GMMerlin? That was a very informative post though. I'll have to remember that if I ever get one of those codes.

446 refers to a vent solenoid or vent control function, not the fpr.

If I read your message correctly, the dealer 'fixed' the P0446 problem for 'no charge', correct ?

It sounds like they identified a problem with the "purge solenoid" circuit on the first pass but did not fix it properly or a hose/wire came loose/got crimped related to it. It is possible they installed a new part that failed (extemely unlikely). So it re-occured. When you returned with this code, they found the cause and fixed it, hopefully for good.

The engine computer does store multiple codes which the technician must sort out. <I'm curious as to why they are telling you codes.>

Hi, its me, http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/seeya.gif checking in to see what you car pros have come up with!! A little more background on this topic: We have a mechanic at our family business (thankfully) who has this little device that tells me what the code is. He got the same code as Auto Zone did. He also told me that it could be something as simple as a gas cap. So, me not wanting to start with big $$ right away, bought said gas cap at Auto Zone. Fast forward to the dealer doing the work, not our mechanic~cuz they, evidently, have the proper BIG machines that will show the problem, like smoke and stuff. (remember, I'm a girl, and am clueless here...lol) The dealer did a ‘driveability’ test and found a ‘fuel vapor leak at the gas cap & purge solenoid” –replaced both-. ($252.14 pre tax) next, on the steering issue, “Lubed intermediate shaft” for $128.91. They replaced the gas cap with an 'official' product, saying the one I had on there was completely useless. So up to speed with yesterday, NO, they did not fix a thing. My husband said just to pick it up. They waived the diagnostic fee, that’s what I thought was strange, and maybe indicitave that it may have been the same problem and they are trying to hose me….. We will have our mechanic, Marty, fix it (He’s the best) Anyway, I just filled my tank up and he said I have to wait till its down to about 80%, which will probably be tomorrow, so I will know more from him then. This sort of thing drives me CRAZY!! Thanks for the help guys, I look forward to hearing your thoughts…..u guys are great! :iceslolan :smooch:

So the codes just show a leak and dealer didn't fix by replacing gas cap and solenoid.

I would go back and ask them to remove the parts and refund my money or fix the problem at no additional cost.

With out actually knowing what all was bad or doing the testing to start with there is no way of knowing on it.
But since you had a code 440 large leak to start with and that code has not came back I would asume that they fixed that part of it.
The code 446 vent valve code is still a EVAP emimssion code but it is a different problem.
May not even have anything to do with the first repair or showed up at that time.
The reason for the no charge for the recheck is probably because they had worked on it before and wanted to make things right with you.
Get your 446 code fixed and see how it does.
Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

I wonder if Sherrie forgot about us...:( NOOOOOOO! I didn't forget about you'all! OK, so this is what is happening...since I talked last....I said I was going to wait till I was down to 80% fuel, which I thought would be the next day... WELL! I'm driving down the road and my mileage (for that tank) is at 111.8 .. BAM!! the "check engine" light goes off! so now, here I am waiting for it to come back on! and lo-and-behold, it hasn't!! (Murphy's Law). :screwy:
Anyhoo, I am going to still have our mechanic pull up the details on it, cuz I guess it keeps track for a short while..... then see what it might say. I have since then filled up my tank, and I am at 200+ miles on this tank.... no light still.....

SO, I have NOT forgot about you'all.... I know you guys probably want to know how it turns out. And I WILL let u know. !!
Talk soon,

The reason the light went out was because the PCM has seen the test pass for that concern.
There is a code stored in history, but on EVAP concerns, if the test passes, it will be difficult to find the cause.

Ok, so here I am almost down to the last drops of the 3rd tank of gas, and there is NO sign of the light coming back on!! Why is that!???! I'm not gonna bother our mechanic unless it comes on again....

I will keep you'all updated if there is more to report.... I didnt understand the last response to ther "PCM" test...thats above and beyond my knowledge... But anyway, just wanted to update you guys. Talk soon!

The PCM (computer) runs tests on systems looking for faults. If the PCM detects a fault, it will turn on the light.
If the PCM has detected a fault and then sees that the system passes the tests after a few tests and ignition cycles, it will turn the light off.
