another optioncherryelky305 11-07-2006, 04:35 PM I dont know if anyone is following my threads or not but I'm sure i sound like a 10 year old. I have been throwing around ideas for a new engine and tranny for my 80 el camino, Everything from a crate to a 450 horse 350ci. Ls1, Lt1, ect... well now im looking at a 89 formual 350 firebird with a 350 tuned port injection engine and a 700r4, engine is a little rough and its going for $2600. He just had the tranny rebuilt, and the engine had a dealer installed short block some time ago under warrenty. This sounds good because its cheap and it is a complete running car. Its got 3.73 gears in the rear, will those go into my housing? anyway thanks for putting up with my immaturity. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-Pontiac-Firebird-Formula-350-No-Reserve_W0QQitemZ330046728221QQihZ014QQcategoryZ64 20QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem there is the link if interested. jveik 11-09-2006, 09:40 AM just remember a pontiac 350 is not the same as a chevy 350 cherryelky305 11-09-2006, 01:23 PM whats the difference between them? I did not know they were differnt. silicon212 11-09-2006, 03:10 PM The Pontiac 350 engine ceased production in 1976, replaced by the small block Chevy in later applications. The '89 Firebird TPI is Chevy powered. All GM 5.0 & 5.7 TPI V8s are SB Chevy based. The swap will include the harness and ECM from the Firebird. You will need to reprogram the MEMCAL for your application. You will also need to upgrade the fuel system to electric-pump and a 60PSI capacity. jveik 11-10-2006, 09:29 AM alright then scratch what i sed there. i think the only differences were the outside accessory mounting and stuff like the waterpump was different and the cams are not interchangeable with chevy motors, also i think the bore and stroke used for the 350 cubes is different between the two? silicon212 11-10-2006, 10:29 AM Yes, the Pontiac motor was a big block. Completely different design, although looked somewhat similar to a vehicle neophyte. The distributor on the Poncho engine is a little more angled than the SB Chevy one is (the Chevy dist is actually angled and not straight up/down). vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
