low oil pressure 95 caprice?mad57 10-31-2006, 10:26 PM ive got a 113,000 mile ex cop car 95 caprice with the lt1 in it, this is my second one last was a 94. is it normal for the oil pressure to be high when cold then drop to just above , almost in the red when warmed up? my 94 does the same thing , is it just the nature of a ex cop car from long idle time? should i be concerned? i though most chevys had a true high 60 psi oil pressure. i bought 20-50 oil for it im gonna try running it all winter see if it helps. just afraid to dump any money into it if its gonna wind up needing a rebuild any way. any help would be appreciated thanks chevy for life!!! capriceowns 10-31-2006, 10:47 PM Why 20w-50? Thats not right. Stick with 10w-30 that could be your problem. 10w-30 is fine up to 0 degrees Ferinheit(sp) 96capricemgr 11-03-2006, 08:02 PM The 9C1 got an 80psi sender and the stock oiling system is nowhere near capable of using that full travel so some folks swap to a 60psi sender to get better resolution out of the factory gauge. I can not say where yours should read best I can say is why not hook up a mechanical gauge and see what it has for actual pressure. I would not do the 20w-50, the oilpump drive stub is plastic as is the sleeve that aligns the driveshaft with the oilpump stub. Ignore oil advise from anyone who tells you 10w-30 is thicker than 5w-30 or 0w-30, the first number is a cold pumpability number not comparable to the second viscosity RANGE number. Yes the "30" part is a range not an exact measurement and many of the 0w-30s are to the thicker end of that range than the popular 5w-30s or 10w-30s. If you want to try a thicker oil I have had decent luck with Rotella T "synthetic" 5w-40 in the blue jug in the diesel oil section. I would change the oil filter maybe 500 miles into the first interval with diesel oil though as they are VERY high detergent and can do some cleaning and begin to restrict the filter with cleaned out crud. mad57 11-04-2006, 04:20 AM hi, thanks for the replys, took it to my buddys shop and hooked up another guage, it read 40/60 cold at idel, then 30 to 40 warmed up, i replaced the sending unit just in case and did an oil change 10-30 , and added lucas oil additive, it still reads kinda on low side when warm, but does not drop nearly as close to redzone, and the slightest bit of throttle and right up to the 60 mark area. so im happy with this for now. thanks for the help.!!! silicon212 11-04-2006, 10:26 AM Don't worry if it's 30-40 when warmed up, that's healthy and not low. The general rule is 10 psi per 1000 RPM. 96capricemgr 11-06-2006, 08:28 PM Lucas is CRAP at best do not continue to use it vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
