Shifting problem (manual)

I'm preparing my mother's 95 Beretta for winter use right now. I'm wondering what would be the culprit behind difficulty in moving the shifter into 5th and reverse. I have to take two hands to get it all the way to the right. I've never worked on a manual tranny before and was wondering what was the likely cause of this. Thanks.

It's mainly only driven during the winter. It has 203K miles, and runs better overall than her 2001 Tiburon with 1/4 the miles.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with the vehicle? I am having the same problem with my 1990 bertta GT 5 speed manual transmission 2.3 lt. and I can not figure out what it is! If you can help it would be greatly appreicated!
