i have a 92 talon tsi and the stupid oil filter keeps backing off and leaking all of the oil out. Sometimes the housing comes loose. It has done it to me 4 times so far i keep replacing the oil and filter... what would be causing it to do that?

Check to see if you have the correct filter...you'd be surprised how people can get that wrong. Also check to see if it grabs; the threads may be worn out on your car and the filter may keep coming loose.

how tight are you tightening it?

I don't think you do, but does your car have an oil cooler?

I tighten the filter by hand untill it wont turn no more then i turn it about 1/4 of a turn more with the filter wrench. Yes it does have a oil cooler.

Did you make sure that the old gasket isn't sticking onto the filter housing?

Do you have any problems with coolant/oil mixing?

What brand of oil filter (el Cheapo, Mitsu OEM, K&N, Fram)? (Idk that this will have any impact, but I think that the cheapo's threads might be easily damaged)...

I've only been doing mine hand tight (with a fram filter w/the grip) and haven't had any problem

Also, are your threads damaged or dirty?

I just took the filter off lastnight, and there was no gasket on there from the old filter but the stud that the filter goes on was really loose so i took it off and cleaned it and put some locktight on it.. hopefully it dosent come off, i was using castroil synthetic with a fram filter. the threads also looked good.

I've heard of the problem before and people some times wire the filter up so it cant turn off
