1989 Camry idle issues.

I just picked up a 1989 4 cylinder camry wagon from a friends mom, with only 93000 miles on it. It is in great shape, but in park it has a up and down idle with no throttle response. When in gear it will move but is still eratic. If I disconnect the Throttle position sense it Idles real high but motor sounds smooth. So I know it is not a fuel problem. It has to be a senser, I think maybe the EGR?

Any help would be great, I would like to use this as my daily driver.

First retrieve the codes. It will tell you if any sensors are out of range.

I would also check for a diconnected or cracked vacuum line.

If those 2 things don't work, clean the throttle body, paying particular attention to the passage leading to the idle air control valve. It's the square or diamond shaped passage inside the base of the throttle body. Use throttle body cleaner or O2 safe carb cleaner. Spray the stuff liberally in to that port and let it soak for about 5 minutes while cleaning the rest of the throttle body. Then put everything back together and start the car. It will be a bit difficult to start but it eventually will.

Well, I cleaned the Throttle body 2 times, EGR 2 times and Tested the Throttle Position Sensor, with a VOM. I that fixed the Idle Problem, I did have to do it 2 times like most people put in there posts. Now I have a new post I have to make for the next issue.

Thanks A Lot for the fix.
