Thanks guys,

Read a post about the timing belt tensioner and noise it can make --just like mine is doing. I have just bought a 1995 Rodeo with 114,500 miles 3.2 V6. Never had new belt tensioner, belt, coil packs or plugs. It does run a little rough. The only thing these people have done to the vehicle is gas it up and change the oil. Oh, and a set of tires about 40, 000 miles ago.

Truck is clean and I love it.

I was looking at Autozone and they do not list a tensioner--they do list a belt pully.

Same thing for what we are talking about?

I love to work on my own vehicles-give me a sense of pride when I am done. How big of a job is the belt and tensioner? Do you recommed that I have some else do it?

Thanks.

the job is very do-able, but it depends on your experience. and i would suggest you get some manuals or online info; factory manuals are expensive but good, also get service bulletin updates-- www.helminc.com (http://www.helminc.com/) or online www.alldata.com (http://www.alldata.com/) which is a yearly subscription with essentially the same info.

there is also a lot here and on other forums, in particular a post by jlemond should be something you search for that is a classic in a direct easy-to-follow approach (as long as you can read ALL CAPS:wink: ).

{{{ EDIT ADD: i found it. here's a link to the thread on itog board that includes jlemond's very good step-by-step timing belt installation procedure:
http://forums.delphiforums.com/itog/messages?msg=3502.10 (http://forums.delphiforums.com/itog/messages?msg=3502.10)
I personally would still want the manual, but the guy in this thread used this description to do the job and was very happy with the outcome.

as to parts, you really should, imo, stick to factory oem parts from st charles isuzu in missouri, free shipping, discount and some good expertize from the parts guy merlin, ask for him. http://isuzu.stcharlesauto.com/Department-Parts.aspx (http://isuzu.stcharlesauto.com/Department-Parts.aspx)
[B]Phone: 800-727-8066
Fax: 636-441-4481
also jlemond sells oem parts and is a good source of info and knowledge. send him PrivateMessage or

is a perfect question for Jerry Lemond, he would know exactly what to do. jlemond@bellsouth.net (jlemond@bellsouth.net)

he is an isuzu tech.

...the belt pulley and the tensioner are not the same thing. here's the standard list for what you do when you do the timing belt

timing belt
timing belt tensioner (it's the hydraulic pusher that keeps the belt tight)
water pump (it's behind the belt, almost the same amount of work)
the tb tension pulley and/or tb idler pulley (some recommend as usual, i say only if indicated, which is probably not)
accessory belts or serpentine belt, whichever you havei did this and it's 'fun' and rewarding as you say. just get the right info and the right parts and you will be good.

I got most of my parts for the timing belt/water pump job at Advance. They do not include the tensioner in their timing belt replacement kit, either. I had to get it from St. Charles Automotive. I also got my valve cover and intake gaskets from Advance (not needed for the tbelt/pump job). Make sure you label the bolts you remove so that you get them back in the right place. It's pretty clear how to time the engine. Good luck and let us know how you make out. Search for how to get the cank bolt off. It was the most challenging part of the job for me, but I didn't know the starter trick...

Great--and thanks. I hope to get this started soon. I enjoy doing this type of work. It is a great way to get my mind off my regular desk job.

One more thing. Am I correct in assuming that coil packs will cause a hard starting vehicle?

The plugs could cause the rough running. Over 100k on them, huh? Could be a challenge to get them out. When a coil pack went bad on my rig recently, it started right up, but ran really rough, as one cylinder was missing. Pulling the plugs will give you an idea of what coil pack is bad, if that's the case.

OK! Very easy to get to. I have all a part. But I need to order the Hyd tensioner. Just out of courosity, what am I looking at for cost on the tensioner?

I am always hunting ebay for Rodeo parts... I see the timing belt kits with most of the parts you need in one package for $149.99 + $12 shipping. Now I know there are junk parts out there.... since i am not familiar with this brand you may want to see if the parts are OEM quality or sub par. But it contains everything but the water pump. I have looked at my local Autozone for the kit since I have the timing belt maintenance on my radar... it looks like it will cost me a lot more through them. Anyway, I just wanted to throw this option out there as it may save you some green.

The ebay auction number is 230043431836.

I guarantee that kit does not include the hydraulic tensioner.

The ebay link was just a suggestion, I am only trying to help... but if you read the listing it does in fact state that the kit includes the hydraulic Tensioner Assembly. My only concern is the quality of the parts.... are they quality parts??? At $149.95 it looks like a nice deal as far as cost is concerned.

Timing Kit Contains the following:
(1) Timing Belt (8-97016-326-0)
(1) Timing Belt Tensioner (8-97116-002-0)
(1) Timing Belt Idler (8-84386-488-1)
(1) Hydraulic Tensioner Assembly (8-97116-002-0)

Sure does include the tensioner. I stand corrected and apologize! The last time I saw an eBay advertiser posted here, it showed a picture of the tensioner, but it wasn't in the list of items included, and in the fine print it said the tensioner was not included. That is pretty cheap...
