I went to change the spark plugs on my son 89 2.3L (Quad-4) and discovered that there was oil on top of the cylinder head and in the spark plug wells. Upon inspection I discovered that oil was oozing out between the camshaft housing and the intake cylinder head. I slightly tighten the camshaft housing bolts and the oil stopped. I have a Haynes manual but it doesn’t give much detail on the camshaft-housing configuration, but does state that the bolts require Teflon pipe sealant. Does anybody know if these bolts actually go into the water jacket or if the Teflon is required to prevent oil leaks? Should I remove the bolts and reinstall them with Teflon or since the oil leak appears to have stopped just leave well enough alone? Also, how about the cylinder head bolts should they be re-torque?

I'd reteflon the bolts, they keep oil from blowing out.

Are the housinig bolts the head bolts too ?

If they are aluminum, they need replaced because they stretch.
Everything on the motor, including the cam housing bolts , should be torqued to spec or thier could be problems.

Also any time the camshaft housing to cylinder head bolts are loosened or removed, the camshaft housing to cylinder head gasket must be replaced because it'll leak :(
