I have a 1993 CVPI that I've been fixing up for 2 yrs now.The engine needs work, not exactly sure what kind but its real tired.Theres over 200K miles on it.Makes a "clanking" sound when i get on the gas hard, burns about a qt of oil a week, and smokes more than i care to see.I was told its the bearings but instead of rebuilding it i was thinkin about buying another used 4.6 and building on that so the car wouldnt be out of commision for long cuz i need my car.I found a 4.6L out of a 1997 Grand Marquis with 40K miles on it for an excellent price and i was wondering what all things are different between the 2 engines like wiring harness hookups, that sorta thing. The Marquis engine comes with all the goodies(pumps, harness etc.).Am i gonna run into all kinds of compatibility probs changing the engines out?Any info would help out alot, thanx

The wiring harness is different for the motor along with the ecm and harness, so is the intake setup, exhaust manifolds. With the said I was thinking just change the above from your old motor, but for some reason the heads are listed as different between the two motor and that could cause intake issues. This is something you might want to look into before getting started.

Head interchange for 93
COUGAR 94 8-280 (4.6L),
CROWN VICTORIA 92-94 (8-280, 4.6L),
GRAND MARQUIS 92-94 (8-280, 4.6L),
LINCOLN & TOWN CAR 91-94
THUNDERBIRD 94 8-280 (4.6L),

Head interchange for 97
COUGAR 97 8-280 (4.6L),
CROWN VICTORIA 97-99 (8-280, 4.6L), gasoline (VIN W),
EXPEDITION 97-99 8-280 (4.6L), VIN code W (Romeo),
FORD F150 PICKUP 97-99 8-280 (4.6L), VIN W (Romeo),
FORD F250 PICKUP 97 8-280 (4.6L), VIN W (Romeo),
FORD F250 PICKUP 98 (under 8500 GVW), 8-280 (4.6L), VIN W (Romeo),
FORD VAN 99 E150; 8-280 (4.6L, VIN W, Romeo),
GRAND MARQUIS 97-99 (8-280, 4.6L, VIN W),
LINCOLN & TOWN CAR 97-99
MUSTANG 97-98 8-280 (4.6L), SOHC,
THUNDERBIRD 97 8-280 (4.6L),

If you want a drop-in motor look at:

CROWN VICTORIA 93-94 (8-280, 4.6L, VIN W)
GRAND MARQUIS 93-94 (8-280, 4.6L, VIN W)

Reekor is correct in his post. However, if you change the intake, front cover, and sensors, everything else will work.
