heating and overheating problem?

Ok I'll make this quick and to the point.
For the past few days my heat has been acting up. When driving around it heats just fine but, if your stopped at a light for a few seconds the heater just blows out cold air. It didn't bother me much because as soon as you start driving again the heater starts to work normal again.
That went on for a few days and then today the same thing happened but with one added symptom, its starting to overheat.
When driving the heater works fine and the temp gauge stays in normal operating range. When sitting at a light or something for a few seconds the heater blows out cold air and the temp guage starts to rise rather quickly, drive again and all returns to normal.
Is this a thermostat problem? Heater core? Blown head gasket? Air in the system? I honestly have no clue, I'm shooting in the dark here.
Btw, I searched for this problem, I found alot of overheating threads but none with both symptoms, so I apologize if this has been answered already.
Thanks in advance!!

Is your fan still running?
The other day it was, I didnt' notice if it was or not today though, I'll have to check. But that wouldnt cause the heater to blow out cold air too would it?
EDIT: just went out and checked the fan. One fan comes on then about 30 seconds later the other fan kicks on too. So the fans are working. I did notice that the coolant resvoir is empty, so I'm sure thats contributing to the overheating issue, but would that cause the heater blow out cold air too?

Your heater is blowing cold because there is no water going through your heater core. Did you read the sticky on overheating? Start at the top of the list in that thread and work down. Replace rad. cap, get air out of the system, etc. Go read it, everything is in there.

Everyones having heating problems. LOL. That will do the trick. Make sure no air is in the system when you refill too.

Try filling up your coolant system and the overflow tank first, I think you're just low on coolant.

I checked it yesterday when it started to overheat, havn't driven it since I found it because I don't have any coolant to fill it with, I'm going to pick some up today when I'm out with a friend. So no, I wasn't just driving around with no coolant *well, atleast when I knew I had low coolant I wasn't driving*.
Thanks for everyone's help! And I just read that sticky, sorry I didn't see it before. If a mod wants to lock or delete this thread since there is a sticky on the same subject I won't be hurt.
