1996 k2500 454 hard to start

I have had the truck for three years and have found no pattern to the problem. It doesn't matter if it is hot or cold. About 50% of the time truck turns over probably about 5 seconds before it starts. The rest of the time it starts easy. Whenever this happens I always smell gas very strong. Truck is tuned up, air filter, fuel filter, plugs and wires. It seems to be a problem common with 454's, I know two other people with the same engine, and same problems. Can anyone help?

Do a search on "fuel pressure regulator" or "FPR".

A leaking injector can also cause hard starting and strong fuel smell.
