If we are lucky, McLaren may!!, just may display their two triumphant GTR,s at the Autosport international show in january 2007.

Following on from their very welcomed display of XP1 LM at the British motor show. It is a great opportunity for McLaren to display their very proud Le Mans heritage, 95 outright winning 01R and 97 gt1 class winning 20R. In the special display area, dedicated to Le Mans legends.

Although the show is a few months away, the list of cars on the ASI web site will obviously grow.

Check this link.

Right, could our English brethren help us out with some info? Those going from the US would probably want to know how long the train ride is to the NEC, what train lines go there, costs, ticket prices, any discounts or freebie offers from dealers, etc, etc. Maybe a few of us could get together at the show...?

I have driven to the NEC from London once, and taken the train once...I highly recommend the train. No parking hassles, no fighting downtown traffic if you miss the motorway exit, etc., etc.

So, who's going to go? :)

I going up, its going to be a great opportunity and im only 2 hours from the NEC, great place, if any one needs information about the show, and getting there here is the official website http://www.autosport-international.com/

and here is the NEC website http://www.necgroup.co.uk/

these websites should provide all the information needed

Hello,

i am interested too :) I am afraid McLaren will be behind bareers, so someone can make something for F1 fans ?

It is 600km from Paris plus shuttle, I don't know yet train or plane.

There will be press days ?

NO SHOW!!! :shakehead

I have been passed some extremely reliable information today. McLaren are not commiting to displaying any of their GTR,s at the Autosport show in January. This decision is not the concensus of all at McLaren Automotive though, so I was told, some of their own employees are disappointed as well. It is a great shame for a company of McLarens stature not to proudly display their race winning heritage.

Not all is lost though, as there may be a privately owned GTR on display in the LeMans legends area.

Thats all the info i have, feel free to ask any questions!

Any particular details you'd like us to try and get photos of? I was aiming to get a clear shot of the chassis plate and interior for example.

I "did" trade day Thursday and (unfortunately) the Ueno Clinic F1 GTR is displayed with the seatbelts obscuring the chassis plate area;also the "Celebration of Le Mans" feature is a very brightly-lit area, which precludes all but the most professional photographer from gaining any quality interior shots.

The blue rope (which cordons off the car from Joe Public) is also too close to the car to allow any reasonable photos, although I've taken a few which I'll try and host shortly.

I can confirm that the car on show is the original race winner, as I have managed to take photos of the Le Mans scrutineering stickers attached to the roll cage upright, clearly visible from the right hand side of the car !

Nothing specific that I can really think of beyond the chassis plate which I assume will be mission impossible. There's a lot of detail on the car since it still wears the full livery, so as much as possible on that would be nice. Some more close-ups of the additional nose piece lighting unit from multiple angles would be cool since that part was unique to this GTR.

I'm sure that the chassis plate is obscured by the belts being laid back over it, but (curiously enough) the car wasn't being baby sat by any McLaren personnel, so perhaps a quiet word with the staff at the main desk of the "Celebration of Le Mans" display may elicit the opening of a door and repositioning of the belts to expose the chasis plate ? If you don't ask, you don't get !

I'm uploading all the Ueno Clinic photos (43 in total) to a webshots album and (with luck and a fair wind !) I hope to post the link shortly.

I've got ones without and with flash, that show up the relective graphics nicely; I hope you'll be tolerant of the amateur nature of them ?

They guy manning the desk told me (as they threw me out @ closing time !) that the car had been in storage near Guildford, Surrey at a McLaren facility for quite a period of time, and I can concur that it was starting to show its age !

When you say the car was starting to show its age, what do you mean? McLaren keeps its cars immaculate, I thought, and from the pictures this car looks good. What looked old/worn?

Thanks for the compliments ! Coming from such committed McLaren fans as yourselves, I take it as a real compliment !

This was the first close-up view I had of the Ueno Clinic car and little things like the colour of the anodising on the door release buttons and wheel nuts wasn't quite as bright as you'd see on a new vehicle; likewise the scrutineering sticker's details (handwritten in at the pre-qualifying ?) were virtually lost, a consequence of either over-zealous cleaning or perhaps handling of the car (during loading/unloading ?) I guess.

The paintwork on the car showed the swirly scratches (usually associated with regular polishing by cleaners) which is visible on the drivers' names photos, although the white scotchlite (reflective) Ueno Clinic and other vinyl logos still shone well , as can be seen on the flash photos.

All in all, when compared with the corresponding Audi R8 from a few Le mans ago (which looked brand new out of the box) it looked a real vintage racer !

hurstg01
01-13-2007, 05:00 AM
^^ I suppose as we are so used to seeing pristine examples of F1's that all look 'factory fresh' (there is a story that when a female (:banghead: :naughty: ) F1 owner takes her car back for a service, every nut, bolt, screw etc that has been touched by an F1 mechanic gets replaced, so the car really is 'as new') the Ueno car does look a bit tatty. It could also have something to do with the way its displayed in the TechCentre at Woking (though hopefully they use special glass to reduce the effects of the sun on the paintwork)

Mind you, I believe Mclaren are doing the right thing (at this moment in time). You hear stories of Ferrari 250 GTO's with a racing heritage getting a complete overhaul to make it look as good as new, but this takes away the racing bangs, scrapes and marks that makes the GTO have the aura around it. I hope Mclaren keep #01R as it was when it won at Le Mans, and dont take away its marks and scrapes

carbuilder2002
01-13-2007, 11:21 AM
I must concur, a racer that is pristine and as new looks so wrong, more so one that has historic interest and history.
I respect our Mr Bridger imensley but still believe his 16R should have kept it's Fina livery, but realisticaly he paid his money and it is his choice to have his car exactly how he wants it.
We are just very lucky he is willing to share so much with us.

They guy manning the desk told me (as they threw me out @ closing time !) that the car had been in storage near Guildford, Surrey at a McLaren facility for quite a period of time, and I can concur that it was starting to show its age !

Steve Matchett (one time Benetton Mechanic /Speed TV Pundit and Author) mentions visiting one of McLarens storage facilities as part of his TV work. He talks about the old race cars being kept under dust sheets.

What Im surprised about is that McLaren are justifyably proud of their racing heritage. Pictures taken at the official opening of the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) show virtually every McLaren race car ever on display. Even including the Goodwood Soapbox racer (Also a McLaren Cars Project)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/rich_w/89795788_d4235ba565.jpg

But come foward a few years and 01R is gone and XP5 and XPLM1 are repositioned.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v24/rich_w/stirling.jpg

So I would imagine the current owner is not McLaren at all and as a result the car is only availiable to them for major events. Which might explain why there was no "official McLaren" publicity regardng this car being on display.

On that note. Without seeing a Chassis plate, how could I tell if the car at ASI is ACTUALLY 01R and not another car? I dont beleive that the seatbelt just "happened" to be obscuring it.

Welcome back Tak.

Thanks for the photos BentleyBoyz. Your name has come up repeatedly in my exploits to capture memorabilia on ebay.

The condition of the stickers and paint could certainly be due to the harsh cleaning of the car before the final laps to remove brake dust and such as the car was covered in carbon soot, road debris and such ground in with the overnight rain and wind. It is a routine detail performed on the lead cars to make sure sponsor decals, number plates, driver names, and paint schemes are visible for "victory"/ publicity shots as the car crosses the finish line.

Thanks for the effort Le Man. :)

Whatever function that display serves, it has been there since the beginning. Here's a shot taken at the Goodwood FOS in 1995, just weeks after the LeMans race:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20D/H.jpg

I have to admit - I had never really noticed it there before. What a shame that it completely obscures the chassis plate. :banghead:

Supposedly every F1 tub had it's VIN engraved in the carbon fiber of the right floorboard as well. I guess that would be the only hope of proving this is #01R short of removing that panel. Of course all evidence, and claims from various sources, seem to continue to support the fact that Brunei got the replica and I am comfortable calling that 'fact'.

Sure would be hard for a replica to get that curbing damage on the lower edge of the side skirt. ;)

Hi there,

I had a great time at the NEC today visiting the Autosport International show.

The Le Mans feature was superb, it was great to see some many iconic cars (Audi R8, Bentley EXP Speed 8 and McLaren F1) close up.

I was a little disappointed that the organisers felt in neccessary to put the barriers so closely around the cars. I appreciate that they don't want the cars damaged and that many of the cars are very valuable but even so they could perhaps of displayed them different and allow us amateur photographers half a chance of taking some decent shots.
Luckily I had brought along my mono-pod which when extended reaches about 5 feet tall, this enabled me to play around with my camera. What I decided to do was to use the time delay on the camera (set to 2 seconds) and hold the camera as high up as I could with my arms, press the shutter and then hoist the monopod up in the air with my camera attached. This meant with a bit of trial and error I was able to get some quite different shots of the full cars.

Here is an example with the Audi R8 :-

Ah yes - the "Bentleyboyz Collection" as I like to term it; I read with interest your thoughts on my last second bidding, and appreciated Erik's balanced view of my character; as we all know, he how bids last often bids best !

I must apologise for my elementary error with regards to 01R's chassis plate location; I assumed it to replicate the roadcar's plate positioning (as on the chassis plate I have in my collection) and never thought to check elsewhere.

I concur that the car on show at NEC is the actual Le Mans winner; the scrutineering sticker and associated damage couldn't be so accurately replicated EVEN by McLaren with Ron's unlimited budget.

I'm reliably informed that chassis 01R has been languishing on a rack at a secure McLaren store at the location indicated in my previous post for the last few years !

Here's the link to my photos from Thursday's trade day @ Autosport International 2007:http://rides.webshots.com/album/556978076zgRVWs

It's the first time I've hosted any photos so I'd value any constructive comments.

I finally had the opportunity to get through all your pics. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by me.

I loathe taking pics of cars indoors because the lighting is often difficult to manage. It's kind of a catch-22 when there isn't enough available light to take a normal exposure without using the flash. You can compensate by using a slower shutter speed, but then you really need to have the camera in a fixed position, like on a tripod, to prevent blurring.

When using the flash, you don't have to worry about that as it freezes the motion when the flash fires, but with cars a flash tends to hotspot certain areas which effects the overal exposure value on the rest of the shot. It can be very frustrating, and the reflective sticker material on this particular subject just compounds that problem.

The best practice when forced to use a flash is to have it mounted further from the lens (not possible on most cameras), directed up at an angle (again dependent on the camera/flash design), or find a way to diffuse it with some sort of cover to prevent it from causing too much reflection. I certainly haven't got it mastered and normally will do whatever I can to keep from having to use the flash when taking car pictures.

All that said (and mind you I am no expert) I really liked your pics. They were well composed and did a great job of capturing the details of the car. You can definitely tell the difference with those and someone who just snaps a shot or two as they pass by. In the future if you brought along a tripod and kept the flash off for most images I think your results would be right there with some of the best. :)

= = = = = =

Tim - thanks for your photoset. I've used similar tricks with my own monopod. They definitely come in handy.

In response to this:

I was a little disappointed that the organisers felt in neccessary to put the barriers so closely around the cars. I appreciate that they don't want the cars damaged and that many of the cars are very valuable but even so they could perhaps of displayed them different and allow us amateur photographers half a chance of taking some decent shots.

I feel your pain, but I think it's difficult to manage everyone's desires in this respect. A lot of people attending these shows could care less about taking a photo that might be suitable for framing. They want to be able to get up close to these cars and really get a good look at them and inside them, and of course the close barriers allow for this. Those of us hoping to capture great images to share with others suffer because of it, but your pics are still excellent given the circumstances.

Thanks again to everyone who has made a contribution here. I live vicariously through you today. :)

The tips are appreciated Erik, thank you ! The only limitations I had in attending on Trade day were that I wore my suit and tie (to do the business thing !) and only carried a simple Olympus Mju 410 35mm compact camera, so the flash and tripod options weren't possible.

I took some wider shots of the Le Mans area, at the end of the day, without flash by resting the camera on the boundary barrier and I'll host these separately for your perusal (despite them replicating Tim's magnificent shots).

I also lifted a flyer on the display, and will endeavour to scan it and host it too for your reference.

Thanks for the warm welcome .

As I originally started this thread, I would personally like to thank McLaren Automotive on behalf of everybody on the forum, for displaying GTR 01R on the LeMans legends display at ASI. This gesture was most welcomed and I hope will be repeated more often in the future with other F1,s they have in their collection.

As with the position/lay out and lighting for taking pics, its a case of working with what you have. I am no photographer in any shape or form, but I just try my best and see what comes out. As usual with the large percentage of my pics, they include more detail shots of small areas of the car. This I hope, makes up for the people who missed the opportunity to view the car in person at the show.

I shall start with some interior shots. These were difficult to take, as you had to either, be close up to the window or about three feet away? So as to take advantage of the flash through the plastic window. This I found out by chance while taking pics of XP1 LM at the London motorshow.

Thanks for the close-up photos rr ww; the last (air intake)one is most telling of the overall state of the Ueno Clinic car (i.e dusty !).

It's a shame that the car was ever cleaned from its post-Le Mans/ Goodwood FOS dirty state and then allowed to gather dust in storage, but (as someone said earlier in this thread) I 'spose we should be grateful that the car was displayed at all, in order that us mere mortals could appreciate its race-worn beauty ?

I (for one) pored over the car, admiring the raw engineering beauty, and had to be asked to leave the area at closing time; I'm sure I wasn't the only viewer to have been afftected in such a way.

It's interesting that something as inanimate as a car can provide such a strong but nevertheless common bond between people worldwide - isn't it ?

Pictures of this quality are never a waste of time.
More so to a guy who is building a large scle model.
And with luck may well have his own to use as a master by the summer.

Unfortunately you'll always get more clicks than posts of gratitude no matter what you share.

I was waiting till you had said "That's all folks" before chiming in with praises, but you should have no doubt that I enjoy each and every shot that you share. I have a hard time capturing the details like you do when I see an F1. Most of my shots are taken from a much wider angle so I guess I aspire to be you in that regard.

For all those who wander through without saying a simple thank you, please accept a big one from me Le Man. :sunglasse

Thankyou guys, for your kind comments. I was starting to think, that close up detail pics were not what most people were looking for.
I worked on the assumption that skilled photographers like Tim, Countach AL etc would post excellent wide angle pics. Out of about 120 pics I took, only three capture the complete car :screwy: ( I also took about 20mins of digital vid tape)
To me, a car is only the total some of its parts. so I get as much enjoyment from studying all the components, as I do from the complete visual appearance of the car and its operational dynamics.

Here are three rear wing pics, The first pic is very interesting, look very carefully at the nearest end of the upper wing plane. There has been a graphic removed from the wing at some time, leaving behind its adhesive stain. Although not complete, to me it looks like it says "Jacardi". I know that 01R was used as a hanger queen for spares through out the 95 season. Can anybody expand on this theory.

Le Man,

Many thanks for sharing your pics, you are right when you say that a car is a sum of all of its parts. It is great to see the car in so much detail.
I spent 7 hours at the show on Saturday and still did not get to see some things I wanted to so it is great for me to be able to sit at home and have a look at close up pictures of the cars on display.
The pictures I take form part of my ever growing collection and I usually only take a picture of a complete car because this is how I want them in my collection.
I think you will agree that the photos posted on this thread by you, me and some of the others mean that we have a superb record of this very special car at what was surely a very rare appearance in public.

Regards

Tim

Le Man:
Like P25 stated, we usually wait until you have posted several times. It is really nice to see full car shots from those that can get to a show before the crowd starts.. but when you get into an event that's heavily populated, the closeup shots really spark! (It's what I resort to when I photograph heavily populated Concours events for a client.) And personally, I always notice something new with the close up shots... like the way a part was machined, or how the carbon fibers were layed, or what they used for fasteners, etc. So your shots are really appreciated!

As for everyone that have contributed with your different angles and views.. a great big thanks! I'm sure I speak for many others when I say that all pictures posted are treasured.

Hey Le Man.

Believe me, those close up pics are the most interesting to me. I have wid angle shots of most of the cars but few close ups of those same cars.

Shots of camera mounts etc are always interesting.....Keep up the good work

As Peloton states, we often don't say thanks for the pics.....well in our minds we do. I am sure there are few if any of us that don't appreciate the time and effort taken when you guys both take the shots and post them.

I unfortunatly have nothing to offer you guys as i have no pics of my own. (Hope fully sooon to change)

So again, On behalf of myself and many others, A BIG THANK YOU to ALL who post pics.

Cheers guys

I went to the show because I was hoping to see a McLaren in the Le Mans feature, although I didn't see the car advertised. I went straight to the stand as soon as I got in and when I saw the words Ueno Clinic as I rounded the corner past the Gulf GT40 I felt the hairs on my neck stand up. It was the first time I had seen any version of the McLaren F1 in person. I think I spent about half an hour looking around it and taking photos.

Anyway, enough of my yammering; here are the photos I took and I hope you enjoy them.

I really need to get a larger monitor to truly enjoy some of these pics. I run 1600x1200 on a 19", but even that's not enough. :headshake

That's awesome that your first McLaren experience was with the most historically significant F1 there is. :bigthumb:

I can imagine the feeling of rounding the corner and seeing it for the first time. While XP4 wasn't my first F1 sighting, I had a similar experience when I arrived at the BMW tent in Monterey and it's distinctive electric blue paint caught my eye.

Thanks for sharing your pics with us. In fact, with all these images everyone has shared I can almost pretend I was there too. :grinno:

I'm glad you like the photos and it was nice to see the Le Mans winner. I thought that if they were going to show one it would have to be that one because of its significance. Having said that though, they did have a Ferrari 512 BB LM and from what I've read it was never very successful.

If anyone knows where I can see any other F1 GTRs in England, for example in museums, please can you give me details. I would especially like to see ones in the following liveries: '95 or '96 Harrods, '97 EMI and '97 Fina, although I'd be happy to see any.

I don't think that many of the cars I saw on TV when I started watching motorsport in about 1995 or 1996 have appeared at the ASI show. They are probably too young to be classics, but they are not current either, so I'll just have to be patient.

David Clark was the former Marketing Director at McLaren Cars and is the owner of the Harrod's GTR now. It doesn't wear its full race livery, but still carries the yellow paint and green stripes from its racing days. Unfortunately you just missed out on it being displayed at the MPH '06 show in London (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=639573).

You may have some luck contacting Mr Clark through his company Taylor & Crawley (http://www.taylorandcrawley.com/) to see if you can pay them a visit to see the car, or possibly find out where he plans to display it next. Be polite and be honest and it may pay off for you. :dunno:

T&C are also the ones who have the EMI GTR longtail listed for sale. They may have that car at their location now so there's a chance of seeing both with some amount of luck.

I've heard that the FINA GTR longtail (#21R) which was here in the USA has gone to England, but I'm not quite sure where it ended up upon arrival. There was another FINA longtail (#23R) for sale in Germany you could have possibly seen as it was sitting in the KS-Autohandel showroom, but it too is now sold - buyer and location unknown at this time.

You might try the Goodwood FOS next year - there's always a chance of one appearing there. BMW's Mobile Tradition Museum in Germany brought out their FINA longtail (#26R) in 2004. They also brought their short tail FINA GTR (#18R) in 1997, 2005 and again in 2006. I can't promise they will continue this habit, but I don't recall the last time the FOS occurred and there wasn't at least one McLaren F1 of some variety there to see.

I saw when I was browsing through this forum that I had missed a green and yellow car at MPH. I didn't notice whether it was the actual Harrods car or whether someone had repainted another one. Is 06R the only one to have worn that livery?

I have been slightly concerned lately that I won't get to see some of the cars in their original state because it sounds like more and more are being converted for road use and/or repainted.

I don't know as I have the balls to just contact an owner like that. I think if I owned one I would get annoyed if McLaren F1 fans kept wanting to come and see the car.

Maybe I could go to Goodwood, I suppose it's just like going Autosport, but outdoors and, from what I've seen on TV, more international too.

Well, thank you for taking the time to reply and hopefully I'll get to see more McLarens at some point in the future, even if I have to wait another 12 years.

GTR #06R was the only F1 GTR to ever wear the Harrod's livery. It changed slightly from 1995 to 1996, but was still mostly the same with its yellow/green base colors and black wheels.

As a side note, GTR #06R also wore two other liveries, each for a very short period of time.

The "San Miguel/Jacadi" livery was seen on the car for a single race in Zuhai, China in 1995. Most of the car was red with a white stripe running from the front hood opening, over the roof of the car, down the engine cover, and to the rear of the bodywork where it met the rear bumper. The largest section of yellow visible on the car were the small panels just over the headlights that still read "Harrods". This color transformation was done using sheets of adhesive-backed vinyl cut to fit the car.

For 1997, the car changed considerably to wear the "Martin Veyhle Racing" (or MVR) livery which was predominantly silver and black. Unfortunately the car only participated in two events before the car was crashed heavily and the team replaced it with a Lotus Elise GT1 for the rest of the season. I am fairly certain the color transformation was done with paint for this livery.

01R is such a stunningly good looking car, my favourite F1

those are great pics of it

I've just watched the coverage of the ASI show on MotorsTV and they spent five minutes looking around the cars, and then they got to the McLaren.

They asked a prof. driver (cant remember who), which one he'd take out of all of the cars, and there could only be one possible answer, the McLaren
