olds 455 engine id

hey, i picked up a 455 olds rocket and i'm trying to find out what year the engine is and if there is a way to tell what type of car it came from. The number on the front of the block is 396021F. Any help is appreciated..thanx

I know that casting was used from '68-'72.
Its pre '72, the compression should be 8.5 to 1 also.

That should be a 455. If it's indeed a 306021F block it's a 68-72 block. But you need to look carefully as most you'll find will have a smaller A next to the F, these blocks were 73-76.
If you want to be sure of the car and exact year you'll need to check the vin on the side of the block. It's located just under the #1 cylinder plug hole on base of the block (where the head meets it)
