The idea was that being a women of thirty I should know how to change the oil on my 1996 Checy Cavalier. I like her and she is still running great at 116,000 miles.

Nice story, but I lost my job and running a very tight budget. I have been told by everyone to,"Go to Wal-mart. It costs fifteen bucks." or "Get the manual at the auto store." I spent my last ten dollars for the next two weeks. I had to half do the oil change because I could never find the oil filter! :banghead:

Could anyone tell where I could find it, please?:uhoh:

Much thanks, me. :)

Wait, how did you half do an oil change? Did you just add more oil? If this is the case you wasted more money because you're just going to have to buy more oil. But anyway, in order to get to your oil fiter, you have to get under the car. While under the car and looking towards the front of the car, look up and it's kinda towards the right, you have to really look deep it's in there. Depending on if there is a sale going on that's like buy 4-5 quarts of oil and get a free filter, you might just want to take it to your local Aamco or Jiffy Lube, if you have one of those near you. Or any minor maintenance shop. It's probly going to run you the same amount of money ($20-$25, only one way you won't be doing the work.

yeah, you'd spend as much in oil and the filter as you would just taking it to a place to do it. You can't spare 20 bucks?

Thanks for letting me know about where the Filter might be. No, I drained the oil not just added. It cost all of 10.00 dollars to get all I needed for the oil change. And That is all I had. No job remember? Thanks for being sympathetic and sexist. And at the autozone you can get a filter for 3.19 STP oil filter. Part #S3387A. 2 quarts of oil because I had the other two.

All I asked was where the oil filter was? I did not know I had to include everything else for you two?

pretty rude for asking for help I might say... and I didn't think that was sexist at all, I think people that accuse other people of being sexist or racist are themselves sexist or racist for believing that...

I meant nothing of the such, I was only trying to help but that's fine. Don't expect any more help from me, I might be sexist in giving you an answer or something. Good bye. :smooch:

just curious, ive never changed the oil in my car, its not easy to do living in an apartment and parking in the street, but i noticed there was no engine specified here, is the oil filter in the same spot on both of the 96 engines?

I just assumed it was a 2.2, but i wouldn't know if there was a difference or not. The info I gave her I learned from my 96 2.2, since i bought the z24 i havn't checked under it yet so i wouldnt know.

Im still having trouble finding out how in the hell that response was sexist, or could be taken as sexist. First I read it from a guys perspective, and got nothing, then a chicks, and still nothing. Theres no way you can even tell if a guy or girl asked the question in the first place by your answer... then only thing I got out of it was maybe when you said, "You cant afford $20?" would be slightly offensive... Oh well, atleast she fixed the problem.

actually I said "can't you spare 20 bucks" if you wanna take that offencively, it should be taken as a shot at your class or status...not your sex. Anthropolicly speaking, it's insinuating that I assume that she is saying she has less money then she actually does, because she doesn't want to take it somewhere for some reason. Not saying oh, you're a woman, so you don't have any money?...THATwould be sexist.

Okay, gentlemen, this is what I found was easier to do. If you pull the front passenger tire off. Crawl under the axle. And it is right there over the exhaust manifold. Unscrew the oil filter (very easy to do). And then screw the new one on. Pretty simple and simply explained gantlemen. :)

Umm it shouldnt have been that easy to unscrew the filter. It should have taken a bit of love to get it off and put it back on. Seems last time it was done the filter was put on half ast.

Actually, yeah, that is why I could not see it without the tire off. It was covered in oil.

Also, there are two different places on a 1996 2.2L 4 cylinder Chevy Calavier. The placement is based upon your 8th digit in your vin number.

Five quarts of 10W30 - $6.45
Style Points for showing the boys how it's done - Priceless
For everything else, there's Automotive Forums.

Thanks! Next will be my head gasket. It is leaking oil. I need to get it fixed quickly. :D

jakegday
10-23-2006, 08:39 AM
are you sure its your head gasket and not your valve cover gasket?

taslo
10-23-2006, 08:45 AM
When I bought the car the dealer had said that it was leaking oil from the head gasket. But, really I am not sure. How can you tell about that? I really did not know there was another possibility?

Anyways, the way my car was she was leaking oil from the oil plug, oil filter, and the head gasket. Or, the valve cover gasket? Any info would be appreciated. Also, I do not know where to locate it? The location would be appreciated too?

Just to avoid further confusion, which engine is in the '96?

ya like that? Anthropolic-ly, lol.
Anthropologically, not be to confused with anthropocentrically or anthropomorphologically. :)

I need a new hobby besides reading the dictionary...

Oh, yeah, and 2.4 and 2.2 filters are on opposite sides o' the motor. 2.2 = firewall side, 2.4 = radiator side.
