What is the scam?

I put a set of tires up for sale in the Recycler, and have gotten 2 different, but almost identical in form offers to buy them from London. They say they have a friend who will arrange shipment and pay with cashiers check. Since I live in Los Angeles area, the offer is insane on the face of it.

Hmmm. Something is rotten here! But I don't know what. How does this scam work?

Read about this London scammer and how he got what's coming to him...probably the same scam they're trying to run on you.

But now that I think about it paying by cashiers check is different from an escrow service.

Scroll down a bit and it explains it all pretty well.

Bottom line, it will be a bogus cashiers check for $10k, and they will ask you to use your bank account and wire the balance (10k - amount your tires sold for) to them.

Yup that is exactly the scam they were trying to pull. Thanks one and all.
