Ok, well how do you know this? How can i verify? This is a lot of money to spend if it dont fit im stuck with it... Is 300$ too much for it with 60,000 miles on it?

The 249 is a direct swap they are all capatible, the transfer case never changed throughout the ZJ (93-98 Grand Cherokee) body style, the VC changed in 96 they mamde a better upgraded version, so any 249 from any of 93-98 model year would work. The 242 is a better transfer case, you won't ever have to worry about the VC with it, but you may have to swap the input shafts from your 249 with the one in the 242 to get it to fit.

Yep! the input shaft will most likely have to be swapped. I had to swap mine when I did the 249 to 242 swap. They made about 9 different shaft lengths and gear teeth paterns. I recomend going to a 242. It's worth the trouble. At least I think it was. I rebuilt my 242 while I had it open for the shaft swap. Not that hard. I'm no mechanic.

IMHO for 300 clams I would want to know that the 249 you're getting is the upgraded version. Look or ask and see if it's the NV249 and not the NP249.

I have one on a 93 so yes they do indeed fit.

I know that NEW PROCESS changed their name to NEW VENTURE in late 96 (end of 95, maybe), but I still see NEW PROCESS transfer cases on alot of the newer chevy/GMC Trucks/SUVs - What is up with that?

Well I just got the scope. NEW VENTURE, Formerly New Process, has changed it's name once again as a joint venture with Daimler Chrysler and Magna International it has taken a new name/former name NEW PROCESS GEAR as of 2004.

Apparently back when it was NEW PROCESS, DAIMLER CHRYSLER bought into the company and they (Chrysler and New Process) changed the name to NEW VENTURE, then some where along the way DAIMLER CHRYSLER bought the entire company and now they are joining with MAGNA INTERNATIONAL to form NEW PROCESS GEAR and in 2007 NEW PROCESS GEAR is going to be entirely owned my MAGNA INTERNATIONAL.
