I pulled the car up on ramps today because Ive had a slight shudder when driving straight down the highway. What I found was a little play in the rack and pinion under the boot on the drivers side. Right where the rod ties into a cylindrical piece of white plastic is where I found the play. Can I replace just the drivers side thats worn or do I have to replace the entire rack and pinion?

Is this the part you are looking for, inner tie rod?

Yes you can just replace the "inner tie rod" on that side. There is a special tool that allows you to remove "unscrew" the inner tie rod which you should be able to rent from a major auto parts store. I would get the car aligned afterwords as the tow would be out.

Yes HotZ28 thats exactly what it looks like and I am SO glad to hear that its replaceable. I installed the entire rack many years ago and I can still remember how aggravating it was. Thanks alot for the help guys!

Well, I just finished up replacing it and it wasn't too bad of a job. Worst part was the small area to work in. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

No, not aligned as of yet. I just got the right side lined up straight with the wheel centered with a string and used the string to line up the drivers side from that. I didnt miss it by much but Im still gonna get it taken care of this weekend . It has a slow pull to the right and I dont want to wear the new tires I just put on it.
