Hi ..Ive been posting here trying to troubleshoot my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited..I just noticed something and want your thoughts..
Ive been having a problem with something that sounds like a sudden occurance of loud road noise..Maybe coming from my tranfer case. I noticed that when I put it in 4low, instead of 4 high( is full time 4wheel drive) that the noise is completely gone. Granted im not going fast etc but if I am doing low speed in 4 high its there..4low its gone..any ideas what this could be?
where would you start?
thanks all

What does the noise sound like?

The best I can describe it is almost like road noise from tires but it isn't. Almost like its trying to wind all the way out without shifting, however I can feel the shifting happening. It does shift but it sounds like it wants to keep winding out, getting louder and louder the faster i go.
(i know this sounds strange but thats the best way i can think to describe it)

That transmission noise has happened to me ocassionally. Usually when it's hot after idling a long time with the AC on. I think it's some kind of overheating protection but I could be wrong. SJ

Could be bearing in transfer case. IF worn and loose sounds like a wining noise. Adding the load of the low gear setup could be putting pressure on it as if to tighten it up. If it's there all the time in 2 wheel positions also then it's likely the front input or rear out put bearings. They are always in use.
