1999 Grand Cherokee Larado, 4.0, auto, 4wd. This vehicle is used on city streets and highway only, no off roading. Its time for shocks, steering stabilizer, front end alignment and wheel balancing. I am experiencing some wheel shimmy at 50-60 mph, and when stopping, not much but noticable. I want a stiff steering but a nice smooth ride, is that possible? Any advice on the make and type of shocks and stabilizer would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Bill

For the steering stabilizer i recommend an OLD MAN EMU heady duty stabilizer - it will tighten up the steering and also reduce any affects of 'DEATH WOBBLE' and future affect. As for the suspecnsion, unless you plan on replacing the springs you not really going to get a softer rid. Monroe Sensa Trac Shocks are very good shocks, they are alot less slopier then most shocks, but again won't affect the ride confort of the jeep.

The only way to get a softer/comfortable ride would be to get a soft ride spring, which I have only found brand and OLD MAN EMU makes them, rubicon express uses them in their kits, but it is a lift kit. I have not been able to find any factory spring that are of the soft ride.

Thanks dksob81 for your reply... Where do I get Old Man EMU stabilizer? I didn't mean that I wanted softer ride than the oem, just not harder, sorry I didn't explain that further. I like a nice ride on the highway, just didn't want to order a shock that would feel like I was riding in a corvette. Something better than stock I guess is what I'm trying to say. Thanks again. You can get it at Kevin's Offroad, here is the link http://www.kevinsoffroad.com/sstabilizers.html

I see they also have a double stabilizer kit for your jeep (WJ).

For the street, I would suggest OEM parts, both shocks and steering stabilizer. Monroe Sensa Tracs will give a slightly softer ride.
If you're getting steering wheel shimmy on stock 1999 Jeep, you should have the front tires balanced; a heavy duty, after market steering stabilizer is just a band aid.

As for the stabilizer, I wasn't suggesting a HD stabilizer as a fix for the wheel shimmy, just to tighten up the feel of the steering and as a precautionary effect to future DEATH WOBBLE.

And if you're getting a shimmy, you might want to have the alignment checked (as well as getting the tires balanced, as Bob D said)

Thanks for your input. Ended up ordering the Monroe Reflex shocks and stabilizer. As I stated in the original question I'll have the tires balanced and an alignment done at the same time. thanks again. Bill
