I have a 1999 jgc that is going through alternators like crazy. A problem along with the alt is the gauges on the dash read nothing or all the way left. Right after changing the alt or removing the negative cable for 10 seconds the dash works fine for a while. Can anyone tell me what the two small wires coming out of the alt should have for voltage? I know they are basically the regulator. One reads B+ and the other reads 9.5v. Should it be loosing voltage when going through the alt? Any other recommendations to check? Even when the gauges aren't working it putting out 13.88 volts.

...the gauges on the dash read nothing or all the way left.
Do you mean to the right?

13.88v sounds right for the charging voltage.
As for the electrical issues, clean the battery posts and the inside of the connecter - Jeeps are not very tolerant of marginal electrical connections.

And, how is your battery?

It has a new battery. I have replaced the terminals at the battery because the old ones were starting to crack. I have done a voltage drop test on all the connections and found nothing big. The only concern that I had was when the engine was running between the B+ and the positive on the alternator I was getting 0.05 volts but when the engine is off ignition on its at 0. I also noticed that the gauges will go to the correct reading when the ignition is turned on but after it’s started they stay where they are at and the tach goes to 0 and the warning lights come on. If I quickly turn the ignition to start the gauges don’t have a change to move and stay to the left. I have revved the engine and the check engine light will come on but no code found with scan tool. What kind of connection do all these symptoms have in common?
