I have a 97 Corolla with the 1.6 in it. Currently has about 164K on it. I've been using Mobil 5W-30 in it. Non-synthetic. Would the consumption be reduced if I used 10W-40 or 20W-50? Any ideas? Also, how much of a gas mileage decrease would I notice?

It May. But I Wouldn't Run The Higher Ones If It Get Really Cold. Personally I Don't Know If There Is Anything You Can Do About The Consuption I Just Add A Qt Every 2 Weeks Or So

With the Engine getting older, try and use HIGH MILAGE oil, and a thicker kind of Oil. The seals might be cracked or leaking due to the amount of miles on the car. Try different kinds of oil, deff, start using High Milage oil though

good luck

I think I'm going to try 15W-40. It's stupid to keep putting 2 quarts in every week. What a waste of money.

Have you checked the PCV valve? (and is it the right one?)
Does it leak, or burn it?
My old Corona ('79) leaked when the oil pan loosened every year.
That engine used a litre per 7500 Km oil change and it had 250,000 Km's on it.
