Gentlemen:

On my old buick i could use a paper clip to access the computer. Can i still do that on a 1997 park avenue? Is the connector still located under the dash near the brake pedal? Thanks for any information you can share.

No. Since your 97 is odb-ii compliant you will need an odb-ii scanner. The ALDL connector (16 pin data port) should be located under the steering column of the dash. Places like Autozone will scan for free if there is a SES/CEL light or you can purchase your own scanner.
