71 Super Shifting problemsImportBuilder 10-06-2006, 06:58 PM I just got a 71 SB last night, and the shift coupler was trashed. I replaced that, did my best with the carburetor, and it runs. But I can't for the life of me find 3rd gear. or 4th. 1st to 2nd is easy, 2nd to 1st is tricky, and 3rd an d 4th are just...non existent. reverse is easy :) Are these trannies usually this loose? I can wriggle the shifter around in gear, as though i'm in neutral. This doesn't seem right, to me. I'm suspecting bushings. Where would I be able to buy replacement bushings, and how much are they? Could there be another problem?? Thanks BoatCop 10-06-2006, 08:12 PM Here's the first step. http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=311711211 Other bushings and shifter parts are also available. It helped tons, but didn't fix it. kmohr3 10-19-2006, 10:14 PM try the nylon bushing for the shift rod in the tunnel Powercoguy 10-21-2006, 01:00 AM Did you check the plate under the shifter to see if it's in the right way? Old VW's should never die. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
