Don't know. A pic would be nice. If it works fine, you really don't need to worry about it. Was the alternator replaced? Is it connected to the alt?

the wire is coming from the alternator. the alternator was not replaced but the drive belt going around the alternaot came off when the crankshaft pulley broke. thats when i noticed the wire. i have not started up my car since friday and i noticed the wire on saturday.

the only wires i can think of in that area would be the oil pressure switch, alternator to battery wire, 2 negative wires for alt, and the power steering pump. o2 sensor is there also but cant be hanging down, unless its been cut.
either your oil pressure gauge doesnt move, or your alternator light will come on. the wire off the ps wont do anything.

I remember my 91 did the same thing and I found a wire hanging.I looked and looked and finally found that it plugged into a little nipple on the alternator.Maybe its a ground of some sort.Good luck:p

actually, the little black wire that runs from the alt. plugs onto to a liitle nipple on the power steering pump. if that wire is not grounded the car will run like shit, not much but enough to notice a difference.
