View Full Version : Welded or LSD? Welded or LSD? Dyno247365 09-30-2006, 09:20 PM MetalHeadZaid 09-30-2006, 11:11 PM i got my s14 VLSD internals for 50 bucks. i could have gotten the whole diff + axles (which you need in order to install a skyline diff) for 220. installation is more when you're trying to install internals though. welding isnt good man, i have a friend with an old RWD 4AGE swapped starlet and he breaks his axles all the time because of the welded. not only that but corning will always feel wierd. just go with a vlsd. S13Driftfiend 10-01-2006, 12:06 AM ive been stuck on this for so long now. at times ive wanted to weld it, but then i think about how much cornering is going to suck and dont end up doing it. and then i want to go vlsd, but then i hear it doesnt work all that great. id love a nismo or kaaz... but that will have to wait for greener days if you know what i mean... id say if youre strictly track use, weld it. if youre daily driven... go vlsd oh and metalhead let us know how that vlsd works when you get it put in nissan_240sx 10-01-2006, 12:42 AM I'd lean towards the LSD, sure the welded diff. works... but still its welded and who knows when the welds will break. LSD+1 corning_d3 10-01-2006, 01:00 AM If it's a regular driver, you'll regret welding it.. Dyno247365 10-01-2006, 01:53 AM If it's a regular driver, you'll regret welding it.. VLSD it is. let's see how metalhead's works before I do mine. MetalHeadZaid 10-01-2006, 02:30 AM HOPEFULLY i will get it in this weekend. if my dickhead friend wont come around then il just fork over the $$. S13Driftfiend 10-01-2006, 08:32 AM I'd lean towards the LSD, sure the welded diff. works... but still its welded and who knows when the welds will break. LSD+1 i used to think the same thing but if you can find someone who has done it before and is real good with a stick machine... you should be fine.. as long as the weld has good penetration EDIT: and i agree, id go with the lsd too (if i had the money) HOPEFULLY i will get it in this weekend. if my dickhead friend wont come around then il just fork over the $$. yea i heard the vlsd is alright, i heard when you slam it into second youre sideways before you know it. let us know! Chuki_breath 10-01-2006, 07:47 PM do a vlsd if its a daily. Should only take about an hour to install. Really its pretty self explanatory once you get under there and see what you have to do. Just make sure you have it braced before you take the last bolts out lol. You dont want 70lbs falling on your chest......or face. Id get a friend to help out. S13Driftfiend 10-01-2006, 10:43 PM how is the vlsd chuki.. when does it lock up? hard acceleration? MetalHeadZaid 10-02-2006, 12:03 AM WTF the whole diff weighs 70 pounds? thats half my body weight. i think im bringing friends for my install. nissan_240sx 10-02-2006, 12:18 AM lol i think he was just guestimating, probably close tho nissan_240sx 10-02-2006, 12:20 AM how is the vlsd chuki.. when does it lock up? hard acceleration? each output shaft of the differential is tied together by a device known as a viscous coupling. This is basically two slotted discs that have a silicon fluid between them. If the discs are rotated at a speed that varies relative to each other this produces friction which heats the silicon fluid up. The silicon becomes more viscous as it's temprature rises. There will be a point where the silicon will become viscous enough to hold the two discs together (this is why the discs are slotted, it is so the silicon will have something to grip to). SHIFT_KA24DE 10-02-2006, 09:49 AM most vlsd users regret saving up for a lsd. viscous tends to lock and unlock whenever they please and it gets a little frustrating b/c its not consistent. but i say +1 for the vlsd on a daily, since it does the job. (if you got a seperate daily and don't have a grand to waste, weld is about $100+shipping by Luke at zilvia.net. i think that was his name. he's had pretty good reputation for doing good welds. i think he uses a welded diff on his LS1 powered rx-7) btw, which car are you pulling the vlsd off of? MetalHeadZaid 10-02-2006, 10:19 AM mine came from an s14 k's. sidewayzS13 10-02-2006, 05:01 PM it depends do you complain about a uncomfortable ride? which kind of lsd arer you looking it if you decide to get lsd? about the welds breaking sure that can happen if you get shitty welds. there are a few places on line that will do welded and it isnt expensive and they are reputable i cant think of the place i have in mind off hand Chuki_breath 10-02-2006, 08:35 PM well i only got to drive on my vlsd once lol. After the install i had to drive it back.....ever since then iv had no brakes on the car so i havent driven it in a while. But anyways, i did drop the clutch a few times on the ride home to see how it felt. It hooked good for me. Could definantly tell a change in traction right off the bat. It fishtailed the rear from side to side but thats because i have no alignment because i put on full multilink suspension that same day. Basically i was driving straight and tires were still screeching lol(thats how bad the alignment is). But i got my vlsd out of an automatic 240 that used to be my moms. So its probably in very good condition for its age and as far as being abused. Its not like she went out racing and doing burnouts and stuff. But yea it hooked good, and its a lot louder with 2 tires screeching. I could tell it was working more so by the sound of me taking off and the feel of the car with it. It was fun for the 10 minutes i drove it. S13Driftfiend 10-02-2006, 08:52 PM hmmm. this has been driving me insane for a while. i would love an lsd but the money tree isnt growing too good lately... so that leaves me with vlsd or welded... since it is still daily driven i think im gonna go vlsd. also if i cant find one out of a 240 will the Z31 rear work?
