Quick question on squeaky serpentine belts....

1996 Jeep GC I6 4.0.

Just had a new serpentine belt put on about a week or so ago and it squeals on occasion. However, it is usually right before I get out the parking lot to go home at night. Ironically, not at all in the morning after sitting in the driveway all night.

When I try to look at it at home, it just doesn't do it....

Anyway, I'm not much for belt dressing, so should I tighten or loosen it to reduce the squeal? And how much? Just keep tweaking it until it stops???

The belt tensioner on the 4.0L's suck, because they are not self-adjusting. Yes, you will have to continue to adjust the belt tighter, because the belt will stretch a little after it is installed. Be careful not to tighten too much!!! I have actually seen the power steering pully get cocked inward from over-tightening on these engines. Step to the driver's fender and eyeball all the pulley's to make sure the power steering pulley is in-line with the others. If not, you may have to back off the tension a bit.

Hope this helps!!!

You're right that the 4.0L has a terrible system. My belt would queal under these conditions:
-Turning Corners
-With the air/heat/fan turned on

I replaced the belt and that solved the problem for a day or two, but the quealing is back. Is it possible that there is a problem with a sticky compressor clutch? Thanks for the great forum!

I can almost guarantee you have a idler pully squeeking. There are two on a 4.o L.
