So you've been to the Shelby track days in Vegas? I've been there once with my dad! It was the year when it rained a lot. Sometime around Jan 3-4.

We also go to Willow Springs a lot! :)

Wasn't there also a Shelby Daytona?

Why do I hear verry little about that car, if it does exist?

I'm not sure I've ever seen one, but for some reason, I believe I know of such a thing . . .

Theres was a Shelby Dodge Daytona in the 80s. Its not as much of a legend as the Cobra though and you don't hear as much fuss about them.

The Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe is my favorite Shelby actually. The reason you don't hear much about them is because there are very few of them to begin with, and even less in existance today.

You may remember the historic races they do at Goodwood in England, and seeing a Shelby there, and what it is, is a replica built in the US and I think Danny Sullivan raced it over there :)

Yeah, the cobra daytona coupes were racing cars, I'm pretty sure. Today, one will cost you more than a million bucks:eek: IF I can remember correctly (I'm kinda iffy on this) I think there only are 4 in the world!

Chris
05-27-2001, 04:59 PM
Here's a little story:
The original cobra was Motor Trends car of the century. It is completely unrestored, so it can be a bit rough. But I think its better that way. It is not for sale, but one gentleman offered ol' Shel $5 million in cash for it! He was turned down in a heartbeat.
I will try and get some pics (it will be at least 2 weeks till I get them, figure around June 11.)

Lizard King
05-27-2001, 06:37 PM
I'd love to see those photos.

I think there were 6 Daytona coupes made, and 5 are still in existance.

I think one ran at Goodwood last year and won.

Chris
05-27-2001, 08:41 PM
Still, 6 is almost none. I'm as likely to see one drive by my house as I am of having a harem of supermodels pouring out a black hole in my sock and beating down my closet door, all trying to make sweet, sweet kool-aid and love with/to me.

I might be able to get those pics earlier, but they won't be of high quality. The good ones will be along in two weeks;)

Ferrari 308
05-28-2001, 12:16 AM
Yep, there are very few...

I thought there were 8 including one replica, but I'm not sure. I have to check my facts.

I know there are 6 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO's though :)

The car was originally yellow, but was repainted a lot for shows so it looked like there were more than one in existence. The first engine was 221 Ford V8, which ran the Cobra for the first time at in England in late 1961, at the MIRA test track by Derek Hurlock. The 221 was scrapped for a 260 fairlane V8, which made 250-260 hp in Shelby tune, with a Borg-Wagner T-10 four speed tranny. It has an aluminum body. Shortly after it was built in the States, the first journalist to drive it was John Christy for Sports car Graphic.
There is alot more, but needless to say, it was a success, with a few 260's, and lots of 289's and 427's made later.
Currently, the car is in original condition, completely. Thats why its worn a bit. It will still (in theory) pull of 5 second 0-60 blasts, but I wouldnt want to try it.

Lizard King
06-10-2001, 10:59 AM
I heard in an interview with Shelby that the repaint for each show story wasn't true.

Anyway, nice pics. What mag did you scan them from?

Are those old photos actually of the same blue car in the new shots?

Chris
06-10-2001, 06:11 PM
Yes, its the same car, the VERY FIRST SHELBY COBRA-EVER!
THis was from the september 1999 issue of Motor Trend.
In it, Carrol himself said they repainted it to make it look like there were more of them then there were (there was only one for awhile) In some of the old pics, the car is unpainted, in some it is probably yellow.

Lizard King
06-11-2001, 02:15 PM
In my interview he says it was painted yellow and then his favourate blue. That was it.

Chris
06-11-2001, 03:27 PM
That might make some sense, as the cars blue was peeling in some places, revealing yellow. COuld someone else put down what they have heard?

Somewhere deep in the back of my garage lies an edition of (I think) R&T from '62, which from memory features what they claimed to be the 1st road-test of that car, was it originally a 221? (not sure). Anyway, then it was unpainted and as I recall R&T were blown away by the performance. Perhaps this mag is in your town library?

In a local road-test of a later model, which featured those neat little vents next to the front nerf bars, a small boy asked the tester why those vents were meshed, to which he replied that it was "to keep out slow birds and low-flying Cessnas..!"

Chris
09-06-2001, 11:58 AM
It started with a 221, but it was booted out once a 260 was aqThe 221 was based on the Fairlane 221, but bigger is better, so no cobra was ever finished with a 221 (it was replaced by a 260 in the first car).

Chris, This is mustangwizard. We have been building a 70 Shelby GT500 (CLONE) convert
(Superstreet) for the last 4 years. We Nascar tubed the front end . Running a Rod & Custom
Mustang2 R&P.steering setup. The Shelby front end
has been made into a 1 piece ,fliptop front end, like a Cobra Daytona. We bought ol Shel's Alum. 427 stroker motor with a 2x4 intake so we could run a
Pro Charger supercharger running 12 pounds of boost. We have a custon blower hat with a 4"intake made from a Cobra oval air cleaner with 2-660's inside.
The rear was tubbed as mush as we could and with Myier fender flares, we are running 15.5"x 15"
Hoosier Pro-streets on the Currie 9"rear end which
was shortened 4" running a 40 Spline ,Detroit locker,
3,25 R&P with a full coil-over, 36" ladder bar set up
to let the girl hook up. The batteries ,32 Gal. ATI fuel cell, CSI fuel pump & filter are in the trunk!
Gas filler was moved from the stock location to the top of the pass. fender with a locking ,flip top gas lid.
What we need is a 427 Pulley setup for our car as ProCharger doesn.t make a blower setup for a 427 at all. We were thinking if we could buy the Pulley setup Shelby is putting on the GT500E . We need it for a blower,Power steering, Alt., & AIR CONDITIONING. We will use our blower hat !
PLEASE HELP us out so we can finilly get the girl on the road and at some Shelby meets!
Thanks again,
John & Becky Davis

Just so you guys know Carroll Shelby modified several turbo Dodge cars in the mid to late 80's. All the cars were modified in his Whitier California Plant, Shelby American Inc. Keep in mind Carroll owns all of the fallowing cars numbered 1 except the 88 CSXT.
The first was the 1986 Dodge Omni GLHS (Goes Like Hell Some more) Carroll has mentioned his #1 car with 492 horse is his favorite car! 500 made.
2. 1987 Shelby Charger GLHS 1,000 made.
3. 1987 Shelby Shadow CSX 750 made.
4. 1987 Shelby Lancer 800 made.
5. 1988 Shelby Shadow CSXT (Thrifty car rental) 1,000 made.
6. 1989 Shelby Dakota 1,500 made.
7. 1989 Shelby Shadow CSX-VNT 500 made.

Carroll also put his name on some 30K+ Shelby Chargers but none were converted by him or his company during the 80's. He also put his name on 15,000 1987 and 1988 Daytona Shelby Z's and several thousand Daytona Shelbys during 89-91. He also had his name on a few thousand 88 and 89 Lancer Shelby's.

Very recently Carroll showed up to a SEMA event in his #1 89 CSX-VNT!!!

I have #46 Dodge Shadow Shelby, I understand there were 500 made. I am wanting to restore the vehicle, and am searching to find out what all was stock on that car. I am the second owner of this vehicle, and unfortunately it is in sad shape. The body is in fair condition, interior is poor. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello everyone. My name is Billy and I am the president of the Steel City Chapter based out of southwestern PA. I stumbled upon this site as I was researching my newly purchased 89 CSX #414 and came upon this page. In case you all do not know, there is another additional resource on the web based on these vehicles --- www.turbo-mopar.com (http://www.turbo-mopar.com) -- I spend most of my time there but will frequent this newly found board as well!

I am the owner of a 1985 Plymouth Turismo (4th place at SDAC-15), my newly aquired 1989 Shelby CSX #414, and a 1990 Dodge Daytona Shelby converted to t2.

Just to make some corrections so no one is misinformed...

The 1989 Shelby Dakota doesn't have a 1500 production number it is 1475.
Carroll allowed Dodge to put his name on the Charger and Daytona, and Lancer. In 1990 Shelby was to release a 16V DOHC turbo intercooled CSX, sadly this never happened. There is one CSX that is truely one of a kind.

The Carroll Shelby 65th Birthday Car. This one is the mother of all Shelby Dodge's. 1 of 1, unique to why it was built and not another like it. This car is currently in the Houston, Texas area owned by James and Cindy owners of FWDPerformance.com who specialize in the performance support that this niche market needs. I own 1987 Shelby CSX #674 and im one of three Admins at www.turbododge.com (http://www.turbododge.com) same sign in and all. Ill be around im sure
