Oil steering leaking and noisy

Hey guys,

My old Nissan Pintara 1990 has a problem. First, the steering was so tight and it was hard for me to turn it right or left. Besides that, it caused a griding noise whenever I turn it too.

Today I put some new steering oil and the grinding noisi is disappeared and it becomes easier for me to turn.

But I have found that one of the rubber wraps which are covering the steering rack is broken and there is evidently that some oil leaking on the ground.

Anyoen who was in the same situation please tell me if it is a serious problem and what can I do now to fix it. If I have to bring my car to a mechanic, how much does it cost for the problem?

Thanks a lot

Sounds like your steering rack has been leaking fluid. Driving while there was no fluid in the rack or power steering pump, could make it an expensive repair job :(

At the minimum, a new steering rack boot is required which would set you back around AUS$80(US$60) But if the power steering rack is damaged internally, then I suggest looking for a secondhand steering rack from a wrecker/junk yard.

Pray that the power steering pump is not damaged, if it is... I would see your car as is and start looking for a new car :) It will be cheaper.

PS: Yes, it is serious. Leaking fluid could cause you to not be able to corner proerly and cause an accident.
