What size & make of tires?sprucegoose 09-23-2006, 12:15 AM Thinkin' about replacing my Michelin Symetrys soon, at least before Winter hits here... Any thoughts on what's a good a good high performance all-season tire, at reasonable price? I really don't care for these tires, and I think they are overpriced. I had BFG Traction T/A's on my Eldorado before, and was pretty happy with them. Had also heard that Continental made some good H/P all-season tires... I also would like to go as wide as I could on these stock rims, without having to worry about rubbing up front while turning tight. Currently have the stock 225-60-16's. I think they look way too skinny myself... How wide can I go on these stock rims? 96riviera18 09-24-2006, 11:50 AM i like my michelin x-radials, they are not h/p tires but they have good traction and wear like an economy tire. i never liked the tread pattern on the symetrys, too economy and cheap looking (sorry). h/p and all-season dont really go together. what properties are you lookin for most? tready wear, traction wet, dry, grip? i dont like contenental tires but thats just my opinion based on past uses. also my tires are plenty wide enough, they are almost touching the sides when i turn. i have 225/60/16 but .5 wider rims(the 12 spoke stock chrome riv rims). i dont recomend changeing the width of the tire b/c you could have other problems when the aspect ratio changes. but if you insist i think they make a 235/60/16, it will be more expensive and likely harder to find. the right tires can make a world of difference in how a car feels and drives. why do you want to go wider? traction will be a problem on hard launches no mater what :D sprucegoose 09-24-2006, 09:30 PM I put a set of those Michelin X's on my son's Saturn. They were pretty decent tires if I remember right. They weren't as good on snow or wet traction as my BFG Traction TA's though I don't think. One thing I didn't like about those was that they were unidirectional, so you couldn't rotate them across to the other side. Just front to back. I think mostly I am looking for wet/snow traction, and treadwear is second. I put a lot of miles on per year... Like 35-40K. I know that HP and All Season don't really go together, but there are a few mfg's out there trying to hit that mark a little better. Trouble is you pay quite a bit more for them, and I'm not sure they are worth it. The treadwear isn't usually as good either. I usually do my shopping around at www.tirerack.com , but their site seems to be hosed up right now with some sort of internet worm (BD Bladerunner). My Norton AV is blocking their site... The reason I was going to go a little wider is they just look to narrow to me. I think the car would look a lot tougher with slightly wider tires. I know my Eldorado sure did. I think I had 235-60-16's on there. So yours do actually rub right now? It must be the wider rims on yours then. Mine don't at all. I think I'll do some measuring and think about it before I just go ahead and go wider. There is a nice tire size/comparison calculator on this site... http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html Yes, when you change tire sizes you can throw things off, but as long as you don't go overboard... If I went to 245-55-16, it is almost exactly the same diameter, just 20cm wider. That is about 3/4"... 96riviera18 09-24-2006, 09:37 PM just curious but what psi do you set your tires to? sprucegoose 09-25-2006, 07:46 AM just curious but what psi do you set your tires to? I usually run around 35 PSI in my tires, but it depends on a few things... Tire mfg. recommendations, what kind of tread I have left on the tires, and how the tires are wearing. I sometimes run them a little softer in winter, to get a little better traction on snow/ice. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
