control arm bushings

Having a problem with the wifes 98 Grand am- a local shop said it was the control arm bushings that needed to be replaced. They said they wouldnt know if the entire control arm needed to be replaced until they had it off, to see if new bushings would fit on it.
Id rather do the work myself, with the help of my father in law. How hard would it be?
Is there a step by step writeup anywhere?

It can be dangerous if not done properly.

Tho they do need pressed out with something, and pressed back in.

A balljoint press works really well for the hockey puck type bushings, just make sure the control arm is not worn away if it slid out of the bushing. Easiest way to do it is to remove the control arm from the car, but you can remove the bolt through the rear bushing and swing the arm out enough to press the old one out and the new one in, but it takes a strong pair of arms to hold it out far enough so you don't hurt fingers.
