I have a 2000 Monte Carlo SS, with only 56k miles, after driving it for a year (I bought it used) the traction control would come on for no reason, then after a few seconds it would kick off, and the abs light would come on as well as the traction control light. Along with this my "message center" would say to "service the traction contrlo". I have tried disconnecting the battery, for up to a week once, and nothing changed. A mechanic said he would run a test on it to tell me the problem for $80. Any one have this happen to them, and can give me some advice on what to do with it. Sorry if this has been posted before, but I looked on here for like 45 min before deciding to post a new thread. Thanks for any help.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, when i first purchased my car, used as well, it had the light on. The dealer was mandated to fix it under Mass. Law. Unfortunatly, your mechanic might need special codes that only the dealer can get, or so i was told. I kept up to date with the dealer, and they said the repair they did to my ABS and traction control would have totaled up to $900+. i know this doesnt help much, but it gives you of an idea of whats to come.

The downfall of the ABS system is that when they get old, the parts are VERY expensive and some are available only as new, there are no rebuilts available, for whatever reason. The good news is that once you fix it, you're good to go for many years. I saw a new ABS master cylinder for a '91 Buick go for $2700 once.

Welcome to AF, simple solution here is to have it driven and scanned with a full function scanner with abs programming this will check comparative wheel speed inputs and pending/existing abs codes, may just be a wheel speed sensor.

Is there any way to see if there is one bad, simply by looking at them? or does it really need to be run by my mechanic?

Looking doesn't test any complex electical component, you could check the resistance at the sensor, about 1050 ohms is right, but they still can be bad even if they pass this test.
