Pass West?

It's been a long time, and I'm trying to decide if I want to do the Kingston Peak trail or Rollins Pass.

If you've done both recently, which do you feel is prettier/funner?

I havent done rollins pass in years. Its only up and back now because they closed the bridge to all traffic. Can only walk across it now.

Kingston peak trail can be a little tricky to find the start depending on which way you start from. If starting from the moffat tunnel/ rollins pass side just go down the road towards the tunnel, just past the "town" of Tolland turn left onto Mamouth Gulch Rd. Follow it till it ends, left goes to Apex Rd and right goes to the start of Kingston Peak trail. There is a sign that marks the start of the trail. Starting from the Alice side is trickier since you have to negotiate the maze of streets in that town. With doing it from the rollins pass side you can take yankee hill trail from alice to central city on the way back, the start is just down the street.

I recommend having the northern edition of Colorado Backroads & 4-wheel Drive Trails by charles wells. Very usefull to avoid taking wrong turns and getting lost on the trails. Got my copy from barnes and nobel. I still take wrong turns with the book and a gps if I dont notice the trail markers hehe.

We opted to go back up to the flat-tops, back around DotZero, along Coffee Pot & Tea Cup trails; my Dad used to go hunting there when I was a kid, and my G-ma (Dad's Mom's) ashes (the one that passed 17yrs ago) are spread out through the Aspens along the end of Coffee Pott.

We then cruised along I-70, through Glenwood Canyon, hiked the trail to hanging lake, putted around a bit moseying our way back to Denver. Stopped in Silverthorn for lunch, went up and over Loveland Pass (instead of doing the tunnel), stopped at Georgetown to hit Guanella Pass, and then we hit some nasty rain, which didn't last too long.

We didn't make it to Kingston Pass, but we did hit the Fall River lake road trail - hadn't done that stretch in a while, kinda bumbed though, as the water level was down real low.

Had today off, so I figured we spend the day in the mountains, avoid the weekend madness.

Next weekend we're gonna hit up to Carbondale/Aspen area as the leaves are really starting to change.

FWIW - definitely found out how important it is to keep up on fuel filter replacements; just recently did mine, but before that it had been about 35k miles or so - very noticeable difference, truck had plenty of umph this time, didn't hardly have to down shift at all. No traffic made it real nice too, didn't have to constantly back off the throttle.
