I am not the most automotive savvy person, but I have changed spark plugs in all of my other vehicles. I have a '02 Passat; when I remove the plastic cover on top of the block there are four holes where I would think the spark plugs would be. Is that it? How do I remove the wires?

4 holes mean 1.8t 4cyl.

The coils are either pressed in or bolted in (2 5mm bolts for each coil)

And the 2.8 DOHC? Spark plugs location?
