I'm leery of getting junkyard parts as I've had used wiper arms strip on me. How hard are these to change? Rock Auto has them for about $30 each. If I do it, I'm going with new transmission links and wiper arms from a-z. Thanks, Bob TommySS 08-27-2006, 07:37 PM I've had more wiper troubles with this one car that the other 50 I've owned combined. The wiper arms keep stripping where them push onto the splined things that come out of the cowl. I believe that they're called "transmissions". If you try to force them to a position other than the one way, the splines will strip. Would recommend getting new vs salvage parts (shafts and arms). I know what you mean about wiper problems. I've had to swap out just about every part AND do some adjustments so the washer system would work properly, but it's working like a champ. Good luck. bobss396 08-29-2006, 07:13 AM Thanks Tommy, I'll round up the parts and see how they fit together. The only transmission links I found were Delcos so confidence is high that I'll get it working. I'm on my 3rd washer pump/timer for the delay wipers. If the one wiper gets stuck on the other, it strips something inside the pump unit and it is kaput. Of course this usually happens on a 30 degree snowy day when I need the wipers the most! Bob TommySS 12-15-2006, 09:57 PM My latest wiper/washer issue was this past summer, and I finally got out the Helms service manual and read/performed every single diagnostic step. The electrics were functioning perfectly, but there was a mechanical rod that wasn't making proper contact. I ended up taking some needle-nose pliers and realigning the rod to the contact area (so it engages and disengages like it should). Haven't had a single problem since. bobss396 12-18-2006, 06:55 AM I finally did it. I ordered the parts last Wednesday from Rock Auto, they were both here on Friday. I needed the transmission link and wiper arm for one side only. I had to drill out the ball connection rivets on the bottom of the transmission link, re-used the press in studs from the old link, other than that it went ok. A little adjustment and it is working fine, thanks for the help. Bob Related Links Participate in thousands of discussions at AutomotiveForums.com! Registration is absolutely free. |
