My son has a 98 Civic with 111K miles on it ...The timing belt has not been changed...We were going to change it ourselves .. My son called honda and talked to a mechanic to see what they charge (about $650 ) the mechanic then said the VALVES also needed adjustment and at Honda they would do this too along with replacing the timing belt and water pump so we should have HONDA do the timing belt job so the valves were adjusted properly ... The mechanic also said that the engine would run a lot smoother and quieter with the valves adjusted ...My question is about the VALVES ? I never heard of adjusting the VALVES I thought the valve lifters were self adjusting ... Do the valves on a 98 civic 4 banger need adjustment and if they do what adjustment is required ? THANKS GUYS ! BOB

I did some more research on the subject and found that the Honda engines have VALVE LASH adjustments both the VTEC and non VTEC ...So I guess I answered my own question here perhaps someone else can use the info ? ... BOB

That is correct. Valves adjustments or Valve lash adjustments should be done like every 50-60K. Also i would recommend having that timing belt job done soon since a snapped belt could be disasterous for your engine and t-belts are normally done every 90K.

Valve adjustment, timing belt replacement, & water pump for $650.00! Is that just labor? The price seems too good to be true.

If your timing belt breaks it's a sure thing it's going to destroy your
engine. Do it as soon as possible.
It's not that hard of a job. The hardest part for me was getting the
bolt out of the harmonic balancer (main pulley).
There's a special tool to hold the balancer to keep it from turning
in order to remove the bolt, About $50.00 on Ebay.
Mine took a 3/4" drive strongarm and a 4 ft long pipe to break it loose.
After that it's just unbolting everything.
The belt was less than $20.00.
You have to remove the valve cover to remove the timing covers
so you might as well adjust the valves while it's off.

Can you use an air impact to break the bolt pulley loose ????
