Is it worth fixing and keeping?

Hi all. I have yet to use the Accent forum part of AF, as I don't have one, but my dad does. I want to know your opinions. It is in pretty bad shape (I'll elaborate) and I want to know if you all think he should sell it, trade it, or fix it. I personally told him sell it and I'll give him my car and get a new myself, but not quite his idea. If I have some real ideas of what it would cost to fix, I might be able to convince him to ditch it.

01 GL (sedan) 1.6L (i think), 5 speed

1st problem. Check engine light has been on for 15K miles - not yet rough idling, so probably not plugs, though they haven't been changed yet.

2nd problem - loud engine noises - erratic pops and groans, at idle, exhaust sounds very leaky - also valve tapping too at most speeds

3rd problem -It constantly runs out of oil - maybe cause he didn't change it for 20k miles.

other problems are there too - never changed timing belt, coolant, etc. so it's ready to breakdown. Is it garbage?
