2.1 tdi espace on L reg boost pressure

hi im new i have a 2.1 tdi espace with 199000 miles on the clock the thing is ive just be on holiday towing a 21ft caravan and the car had no power up hills :banghead: the boost is on about 10 psi as i was in wales i pulled over and put a bleed valve in between the actuater and the boost pipe from the hosing i got it up to 16psi and the car pulled up every hill no proplem but the little gauge that is in the car on the dash was going into the red does anyone know what the boost should be or if 10psi is right why i got no pulling power thanks andy:smooch:
