on my 98 Metro 1.0. The sticker on the inside of the hood says to adjust ignition timing I must short two pins on this plug. The sticker shows a six pin diagram. I found a four pin plug with an unknown module plugged into it but nothing else. The Haynes manual is very poorly written in this respect.

I believe you are talking about the diagnostic port/plug. On my 94 it's located on the drivers side of the firewall with a rubber cap over it. Here's a link on setting the timing from the team swift board indicating the plug may be near the coil.
