1997 Sunfire gasoline smell any ideas?

:uhoh: Hi everyone, I have a 97 Sunfire convertable, all of a sudden I noticed after or while I'm driving, I smell the odor of gas in the area of the right rear of the car, cap is on tight, don't see any leaks, after the car sets for awhile the smell is gone,can't figure where its comming from, any ideas?? thanks, Jerry... :shakehead

I had the same problem and the leak was in the filler pipe. The fuller the tank, the worse the smell.
When you are filling it with gas, look underneath and you will see it drip, if it's the pipe. Easy to get off, seal the pipe and put back on.

On the other hand, if it's the tank, break out the wallet.

Is the "CHECK ENGINE" light illuminated?

I would guess it would be a gas leak... just my .02

If the odor is gone when engine off it may be due to a gas line that is under pressure ex: line between the fuel pump (in the tank) and the fuel filter i guess, when engine on the fuel pump delivers enough pressure to cause the leak more present check fitting at the fuel filter or rust on the line.

I had the same problem on my cavalier 93 a rusty line had to be changed
