Pontiac Grand Prix 2002 troubleshooting

Hi. I have a 2002 Grand Prix with 97,000 hwy miles on it. Recently the gas gauge started bouncing up and down erratically and now the heat gauge is moving up and down (a little more slowly). My question is: Does anyone think I have an overheating problem or does it sound more like a gauge problem.
It shows overheating and then back down again within the first ten minutes of driving the car. I appreciate any feedback.

It would be helpful to post you engine size and model GP.
When it shows overheating where or what is the gauge reading before it drops down.
On fuel gauge does it reads full to low properly as you use gas even with the bounce?
