need a motor, i have a quick question about which i can use

alright my friends got an '84 ranger w/ the 2.3l 4 cylinder. i was wondering if you could use a newer 2.3L w/ efi ( '92 i think he said), if you just used the block and mabye the head. just use all the intake parts of the '84 to keep it carborated. well, then the first thing that poped into my head would be the fuel pump being a problem. (ones got the mechanical type (i assume) and the other is electric.) hum... just thought i'd ask, it may be a dumb question but, hey...
