Battery is dead - but not

I drove home from work yesterday - completely normal operation. I went to start the engine (2000 Nubi auto) and it acts like the battery is completely dead. I got maybe half a revolution of the engine and nothing more. I Hooked up jumper cables from the other car and turn the key - same thing. I let it sit and charge for a few minutes - same thing. Then I removed the Nubi battery altogether and hooked the jumper cables to the Nubi's battery cables - same thing.
As I said before, the last drive (12 hours earlier) was completely normal, lights and everything worked fine. I am at a loss as to what to check next. Grounds just don't go bad instantly but are on the list of things to check anyway. Starters CAN go bad pretty quickly but it would still be strange for it to go like this. Any ideas from longer-term owners?
