Tiptronic all the way! Manual is also good. enzo@af 03-06-2001, 10:00 PM Hey, Lotus, do you know where that picture was taken? Was it at a mall near Azusa California? Psman32@af 03-17-2001, 11:01 PM I think they were thinking "what is the average age of a guy looking to buy a Mercedes and would he rather spend time shifting or relaxing" and I think they choose relaxing. They shoudl still offer it as an option I think. BBD 05-04-2001, 05:28 AM This car is really an E430 ,, AMG is a company that modifies Mercedes.... I rather like the BMW M powerd engines cuz they are done by BMW.... Anyways if you looking for a Fast E class of any fast Mercedes ,,, please check Rennetech (spelling is wrong) or a nice little company called Barbus .. here is a Link you SHOULD see V12 E Class Mercedes capable of 206 MPH or 330 Km/h :) lemme see if I can put a Picture here. check this site A MUST Screw AMG http://www.fantasycars.com/sedans/html/ev12.html http://www.fantasycars.com/sedans/mercedes/ev12t.jpg (http://) BBD 05-04-2001, 05:28 AM BBD 05-04-2001, 05:29 AM gang$tarr 05-05-2001, 12:41 AM here you go BBD: http://www.fantasycars.com/sedans/mercedes/ev12t.jpg gang$tarr 05-05-2001, 12:42 AM or did you want: http://www.fantasycars.com/sedans/mercedes/ev12t.jpg BBD 05-05-2001, 11:12 AM Gang$terr ahhhh thank you so much :) how you do that hehehe gang$tarr 05-26-2001, 03:42 PM uhhh Psman32@af..... an old guy that wants a relaxing ride wouldn't buy an E55, an E55 is for speed..... they would buy an E430 or an S Psman32@af 05-30-2001, 05:46 PM yeah i know an E55 is built for speed, but that doesnt mean thats how it will be used. I know someone who owned a Tarus SHO, and said it was just ur average Tarus and there was nothing special about, because he drove it as an average car. No matter what the car is, if it is driven as an average car, the person driving it will always see it as an average car and thats how some of the people who buy the E55 might be. gang$tarr 05-30-2001, 06:14 PM possibly.... but i think any old guy that wants to drive slow would rather have an S-class than and E55 thaa 06-12-2001, 06:27 PM AMG is the inhouse-tuner for Mercedes, owned by Mercedes (or DaimlerChrysler if you like... :)) ...just like Mugen is to Honda, STI to Subaru, Ralliart to Mitsubishi, M to BMW etc... oh, Mercedes has always built cars for the elder rich people, (to senile to drive stickshift... ;) ) BMW is for the younger, sportier people... ...my opinion... (often when streetracing here in stockholm, a dude comes with his E55 AMG, and kicks almost everybodys ass.. lost of go in that car!!) thaa 06-13-2001, 06:47 PM Originally posted by my self (often when streetracing here in stockholm, a dude comes with his E55 AMG, and kicks almost everybodys ass.. lost of go in that car!!) here he is, ready to kick some ass!! Porsche 06-13-2001, 07:34 PM Uh, your streetracing is kinda wierd., looks like a town gathering or something. Then again, I'd gather for a 300ZX and an E55. gang$tarr 06-13-2001, 08:52 PM i know, it's like in the boonies or somethin, haha, in the middle of nowhere.... hahaha that guy wit the E55 needs some better rims.. i no like those Porsche 06-13-2001, 10:51 PM Well, they are the Standard AMG rims. They do kinda look like there's almost no gap between the metal though. moe182 08-23-2001, 02:53 PM The E55 for what it is, is a very good car.....i mean it has almost has the same (its a hair slower) performence as an M5 that is driven by a PROFESSIONAL DIRVER.....but all you have to do in an E55 is slam your foot down, and hold on... gang$tarr 08-23-2001, 06:14 PM yeah it's so shitty that they're automatic only.... that's why I like M5s cause it's manual only..... for real drivers, not for retards who just know how to slam the peddle down moe182 08-31-2001, 02:33 AM Well thats one way to look at it....but i mean if you spend most of your time in rush hour traffic you're probly better off with an automatic....and from what i hear the really great thing about the BMW M5 and M3 is that they are "driver cars" but that is also one of there cons....they are suposedly too hardcore for some. So i guess its just prefrence. Granted BMW ARE alot more orientated towards driving, not JUST because it comes manual but also if you want to shut off all the BS driving aids you can, but in all benz's you cant. (even when you "shut them off" they're still running, just at 60% productivity) jmcno2 09-09-2001, 04:16 PM I'm an old guy who chose an E55 over an S-class. I may not use all that performance very often, but I like knowing that it's there. For my driving, an automatic works best. Of course, the transmission has the touch shift feature for manual up and down shifting. It may not be a true manual, but it works very well. Jay! 09-09-2001, 04:18 PM Welcome to AF! :D gang$tarr 09-09-2001, 09:07 PM jmcno2 post up some pictures of your ride jmcno2 09-10-2001, 08:12 PM I will be taking my E55 on a trip from home (NC) to West Virginia this coming weekend. Lots of twisty mountain roads. Should be fun! I will post some pictures when I get back. Thanks for the suggestion. jmcno2 09-22-2001, 07:10 PM I drove my E55 to WV last weekend. This was my first trip in it. I did quite a bit of both freeway and mountain road driving. All I can say is, "I own the road." I've attached a picture. jmcno2 09-22-2001, 07:13 PM Here's another shot of my E55. jmcno2 09-22-2001, 07:17 PM One more picture. Porsche 09-22-2001, 11:29 PM Oh, how nice. I love to see an AMG anytime. Does it say who built your engine? gang$tarr 09-23-2001, 01:17 AM wow... sweet ride one of my friend's dad has an E55 too, but it's black it's good you chose the E55 over S-class, very good choice :D now you have a luxury drivers car jmcno2 09-23-2001, 02:31 PM The engine is based on the 5 liter that is standard in the S500. It is modified by AMG (Aufrecht (founder), Melcher (partner), Grossaspach (Aufrecht's hometown)). Try the following URL for details. http://www.autostv.com/2000/2000_Mercedes-Benz_E55_AMG.html jmcno2 09-23-2001, 03:09 PM Here is the AMG page on the Mercedes site. http://209.167.164.66/brand/container.jsp?/models/amg/about/index.jsp&modelCode=AMG Crackerman 01-02-2002, 10:48 PM As a mercedes tech, I am speaking from experience. In case you haven't noticed all Benzes come with a five speed automatic. Except the new C coupe and slk 230. The transmission is the same in all cars albeit with different clutch packs and gear ratios. AMG makes the transmission shift much faster than any other auto tranny on the market. And it will bark the tires with ESP turned off while shifting into 2nd. The manumatic will do anything you want it to. including bouncing off the rev limiter in all gears.. Automobile magazine did a comparison when the M5 came out, the E55 is cheaper stops faster rides smoother and will almost out run the M5, and is a zillion times more reliable. And you don't have to wait 1,200 miles before your fist full throttle application. I'd personally give renntech a call and for 5,000 to 7,500 can install a Euro spec 6-speed gear box, If you can afford the car, you can afford this. All European cars are available with stick shifts. Emission regulations doesn't permit them into the US. jmcno2 01-03-2002, 12:03 PM Thanks for the inside inside point of view. I am very happy with the E55 and especially the transmission. I understand that most serious drivers would prefer a true manual, but for my driving the manumatic gives me the best of both types. I use the E55 as primary transportion, not as a rally car. If I wanted a rally car, I would have picked something with two doors that weighed a lot less than 3700 pounds. But if you're driving a "real" sports car and you pull up next to me at a stop light on an empty road, don't rev your engine unless you want a whippin'. Crackerman 01-03-2002, 03:58 PM AMEN! that's the way its supposed to be. Mercedes is probably the highest quality car you can buy without going into megabucks supercars. And they have the performance needed to hang with those supercars too. IF that still isn't enought there's always renntech and Brabus. keep in mind though that they will viod your factory warranty. All in the name of fun and speed. Crackerman 01-04-2002, 12:58 AM Granted BMW ARE alot more orientated towards driving, not JUST because it comes manual but also if you want to shut off all the BS driving aids you can, but in all benz's you cant. (even when you "shut them off" they're still running, just at 60% productivity)
They aren't running at 60% the engine management merely allows full throttle to be applied which will easily overpower the rear brakes as they try to keep the wheels from spinning. And why would any body buy a 6-speed car that doesn't allow you to powershift? My friends a BMW tech, the hydraulic clutch doesn't allow a powershift while bouncing off the limiter, it just slips the clutch until it wears out(you'd have to try to power shift all the time though) it is a 900 dollar clutch plus labor, a benz's auto tranny is gauranteed for the 50,000 warranty and the fluid is good for 100,000 miles , why complain? You get the best of both worlds except without the third pedal. gang$tarr 01-04-2002, 08:04 PM bmw and mercedes are both great companies my family is really bmw oriented (but we own both bmws and mercedes), so i prefer the bmw over the mercedes but they are damn close BigBabyB 01-10-2002, 02:00 PM I am fortunate enough to own a 2001 ML55 AMG and a 2002 S4. Overall the best performane is in the ML55 becaus it has alot mor torque then the S4 but The S4 sticks to the road better i don't think it's really fair to compair an M to an S4 Crackerman 01-11-2002, 01:53 AM Sure its fair to compare the 2. If the M-class kicks the audi's ass, then what's to compare? gang$tarr 01-11-2002, 05:45 PM it's an SUV vs. a sporty car they're not in the same category moe182 01-13-2002, 12:57 AM Originally posted by Crackerman Sure its fair to compare the 2. If the M-class kicks the audi's ass, then what's to compare? No, you really cant compare the two cars.....like gang$tarr said, one is an SUV and the other is Sports Sedan.... And for the record the S4 would PASTE the ML..... Crackerman 01-13-2002, 11:41 PM but for the fun of it, who cares? I would rather own the fastest suv currently in production, than a little 4 door sedan, wouldn't u? And u can cruise at 155 mph ALL day long. gang$tarr 01-14-2002, 03:58 PM Originally posted by Crackerman And u can cruise at 155 mph ALL day long. not quite all day... don't forget you gotta fill up the tank every hour :) (atleast) Crackerman 01-15-2002, 12:55 AM Oh, sorry. I forgot about the gas. and other little things. My bad gang$tarr 01-15-2002, 04:15 PM Originally posted by Crackerman Oh, sorry. I forgot about the gas. and other little things. I would rather own the fastest suv currently in production, than a little 4 door sedan, wouldn't u? And u can cruise at 155 mph ALL day long. I never understood the appeal of owning a fast SUV....its an oximoron. Trucks are made to go off roading, not to do 155mph. And id personally like the "little 4 door sedan" because when we hit a turn ill be lauging my ass off at you, as you roll down the cliff..... gang$tarr 01-15-2002, 04:53 PM I think i'd rather have the S4 also i don't like the mercedes, i'd rather drive our X5 i'm not really an SUV kinda guy though, i like them :uhoh: just not as your only car. If i had only 1 car, than i wouldn't get an SUV. but i would get an SUV as like a 2nd or 3rd car. Cause you can't drive sporty cars in the winter, and i'd rather have an SUV do drive in the snow than a sedan. So 1. S4 2. SUV :D Euro19 01-15-2002, 11:57 PM Originally posted by gang$tarr not quite all day... don't forget you gotta fill up the tank every hour :) (atleast) Well, if you want to save gas and eco here in Europe itīs available the E-class 2.2L Diesel with 116HP and 0 to 60mph in about 15Ļ, 95mph, at about $50000. Imagine if it would arrive in US, I guess never! jejeje   :D  Crackerman 01-16-2002, 12:32 AM i don't like the mercedes, i'd rather drive our X5 as quoted by gang$$tar I'm really sorry that u would rather drive an X-5. my roomate is a BMW tech and i quote him when i say that bmw's are the ford of the european car market. The X-5's are the biggest piece of crap and they're hard to work on. I'm not arguing,... merely stating a fact. If u want quality. performance AND a better all wheel drive system go buy a mercedes ML500 or ML55 AMG. Simple as that. gang$tarr 01-16-2002, 07:36 PM Originally posted by Crackerman i don't like the mercedes, i'd rather drive our X5 as quoted by gang$$tar I'm really sorry that u would rather drive an X-5. my roomate is a BMW tech and i quote him when i say that bmw's are the ford of the european car market. If u want quality. performance AND a better all wheel drive system go buy a mercedes ML500 or ML55 AMG. hahahahaha :D that gave me a good laugh..... but seriously! lol :) if you wanna state a fact, show me proof since every magazine reviews the X5 as one of the BEST SUVs you can buy, with no arguements here, the best handling SUV you can buy. BMWs are quality cars, that's why my family continues buying them cause we never have any problems with them Ford of the european market my ass, have you ever been to europe? There aren't that many BMWs around, and most people in europe like BMW. Crackerman 01-17-2002, 04:51 PM I'm sorry that you think that BMW is better, but as a Mercedes technician, you'll never convince me that BMW is a superior product. Hands down. Shariq 01-28-2002, 03:43 PM I read in Car & Driver that the X5 uses a anti-slip system that COOKS the brakes because instead of just electronically cutting off power to that wheel, it applies the brakes. Not smart if you ask me. Crackerman 01-28-2002, 04:20 PM Mercedes does the same thing. Except it reacts much faster and is far superior to BMW's system. Benzaholic 06-23-2002, 02:09 AM Lotsa topics in this thread. ;-) We're better off in the US without the MB manual. It's a disappointing unit, especially compared to other German sticks. And I can't remember how many times I've read that the MB automatic is an amazing thing. And I believe the new 7 series is only offered with an automatic, at least in the US, and that includes a scary little column-mounted shifter. ML55 vs. S4. Hmm. How about a Subaru WRX to scare them both. (Somebody slap me for that. Hard.) The E55 wheels aren't incredibly attractive or even flattering, but the fun part is that you can leave an E55 completely showroom stock, and still embarass most other cars, even when they have been modified. I'm not convinced that Mercedes quality is as superior as it used to be. Let's see how the current ones hold up after ten or fifteen years, Meanwhile, I'll stick with 1980's models, or maybe an early 90's R127 SL. But if I were offered my choice of an M5 or an E55, but not both, I'd take the E without having to think tooo long about it. I just wish they could/would bring more diesels over here, so they get the chance to age down to my price range. Hard to maintain my habit with new car prices. It was produced in limited numbers and was a serious rocket ship! Since that time Mercedes has acquired that company and made it the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz. That company is ////AMG and what makes their creations so special compared to other German cars is their durability. They last a very long time. Each engine in an AMG car is made from scratch by one AMG engine technician. Their slogan is, "One man, one engine". The fastest Mercedes made is currently the E55 ////AMG. It has over 400HP in a medium sized chasis. It doesn't need a manual shifter because people who can afford one don't want to shift as they drive through city streets and there is no loss of power when the right foot is in control on the highways. P. pkmaven 07-21-2003, 07:31 PM The new E55 AMG has a supercharged 5.4 liter V8 that put out 469 HP, and 516 lb-ft of torque. It is, without a doubt a screamer in anordinary E-class body. It should hold the power at the top until next year when BMW releases their new M5 with a 500 HP engine. P. EnzoNello575 08-14-2003, 10:55 AM If you knew anything about AMG, they built their entire foundation on Automatic transmissions. Their newest one coming out in a couple of years will be an automatic 7-Speed transmission. Oh, and the E55 could dust almost any car on the road including a Ferrari 360 Modena and a Corvette Z06. Now who would want an M5 now? tjcmbe55amg 12-25-2003, 10:41 PM If you think the E55 is "really just an E430" you have no idea what you are talking about. Mercedes Benz is one of the best automatic transmission makers in the world. They are now the only company to produce & offer 7 speed automatic tranmissions for the market. They are the one who produces a 5 speed automatic transmission which handles 738 lb-ft of torque with full warranty.
