89z24 trannymccoy89z24 07-14-2006, 09:25 AM New member, but not new to the site. I have spent the last week reading everything that has to do with transmissions in all 51 pages of problem diagnosis. I have gotten some really good info, step-by-step directions, diagrams and even helpful links. :naughty: Expert now?? NOT!!!!:shakehead I never did find the answer to my exact problem. I have an 89 z24 that hits 3k to 4k before it will shift into gear. Once it does shift, it slams into gear hard. It will rattle your teeth loose putting it into gear also.:icon16: (I am thinking torque converter) It is a 3 speed. No overdrive of course and I believe the tranny is a th125c. I just bought the car and this will be the first weekend of work on it. I paid $400 for the car, so I have more work than the tranny to do. Taking care of the most serious problem first is my plan. I will be changing fluid and filter this weekend and see what happens. I will check the tcc solenoid, but I am not having a problem with it stalling do to lock up. There are a couple other things I am going to look at, like the pressure control sensor, the throttle position sensor and throttle valve cable. If anyone has any other ideas to toss in the arena, please feel free. 89z24 1-Shadetree mech 0 :banghead: I will keep the post informed as to my progress. Thanks again to everyone that makes a site like this work. Mccoy USN jakegday 07-14-2006, 10:16 AM throttle pressure cable, you know how your accelerator cable goes to the top of your engine, to the throttle body, theres also another cable that goes to your transmission, so your transmission can know exactly where the accelerator is at, like if its pushed in suddenly, the transmission would respond by shifting, im guessing when you press on the accelerator your cable is pulling just fine, but when you let off, it is not pushing it back, probably cuz its rotted away, (ive had this exact same problem) mccoy89z24 07-14-2006, 10:35 AM Thank-you for the tip jakegday. I beleive I have that on my check list. Unfortuatly I am at work and my little green book of notes is at home on the work bench. :shakehead I will add that to my list of suspects if not. I have only test driven the car and gave it a quick look over before buying it. I am sure once I get the car in the air my list of to do's is going to get long. :banghead: For 400 bucks what can I expect. Just hope I am not bitting off more than I can chew:icon16: mccoy89z24 07-15-2006, 12:42 PM Well the car is fixed!!!! I started yesterday with a transmission fluid and filter change and checked the throttle pressure cable. I assumed this was not the problem because the cable was already replaced before I bought the car. Needless to say it was replaced, but the connector attaching it to the thottle body was broke. Once I fixed and reattached the cable the car drove like a champ. Now on to the other projects. Thank-you jakegday for your help. I actually did not have that on my list, since I thought it was already replaced. I decided to check it, on your advice and boy am I glad I did. OverAllComa 07-15-2006, 01:28 PM See, and I was gonna suggest that the fluid level need to be checked and the filter changed. My old Z was low on tranny fluid for a while and would kick like all hell. mccoy89z24 07-16-2006, 07:27 PM Nope it wasn't the fluid and filter. At least it was still a simple fix. Dished out only 37 bucks for fluid and filter, but reconnecting the cable was free.:cwm27: The car runs and drives great now. To bad the body is not in the best of shape. Maybe I will restore it. Then again I only paid 400 dollars, so I can just run it till it give out on me. jakegday 07-16-2006, 07:42 PM you're welcome vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
