Huge clouds of smoke intermittently coming from car

Hello Geo experts,

I am somewhat stumped at my current problem. I recently replaced a severely leaking crank seal and also put in a new PCV valve cause they're cheap. Well, tonight I drove about 20 miles to a friend's house, and around the 13 mile mark, massive clouds of thick white smoke would come out of my tail pipe for about 5 seconds, then it'd stop and repeat every 20 seconds. The car runs excellent, no loss of power or anything so I am stumped. I pull into a gas station and let it idle and white smoke was coming from the tail pipe but it didn't smell sweet like burning coolant, but not exactly like burning oil either. I checked the oil level and it was good and the car temp. gauge is right below the half way mark so it isn't overheating.

I suspected the PCV system so I disconnected the hose from the valve cover and drove it home a couple hours later and the smoke cloud incident stopped. So, does anybody know what would cause the massive clouds of smoke? I've never encountered anything like this before. Could it be a faulty PCV valve? Please help!!

Not sure, but maybe the PCV is in backwards. Like you said, it sure sounds like burning coolant. Check for other signs of head gasket leak, such as milky oil. There are other posts here with this info.

Change the PCV, and check your vacuum hoses for kinks, cracks, and if they're plugged.

Thanks for all the responses, but I think I figured out what the problem is. I did a compression test on it and the results are as follows: Number 1 cylinder 135 psi Number 2 cylinder 160 psi Number 3 cylinder 160 psi
Redid number 1 with a few drops of ATF and it went up to about 140. Two very experienced technicians concur that it needs new rings and the huge cloud of smoke is from blow by. I guess I gotta save up for a JDM engine soon. Thanks for yalls help!
